I just bought myself via ebay a schlumbergera, a small cutting, with a white flower with pink throat. No idea how fast growing they are etc as I never owned one, but thought it would look nice on windowsill once it's grown of course.

In the meantime I guess winter for me will give me time to catch up on a few of my conspiracy dvds, dunno if you guys are into that stuff, you know like the 911 stuff, Illuminati stuff, British royal family stuff amongst a host of other things...... I hear y'all running for cover now the class freak has emerged ;-)

I have Amaryllis growing in containers here year-round. They bloom for me about twice a year. I have yet to see tulips here...perhaps I could acquire and winterize them in the refrig. crisper then plant them in March? Of course I'll need to identify the bulbs being tulips and not onions. Ha Ha! Hmmm...I read somewhere that a certain flower bulb is edible but don't remember which one?

When we got this house, there were hostas all over the sunniests spots in the yard and absolutely none in the shade. As a result, I get the most beautiful show of giant hostas for about two weeks in the spring before they start looking like someone hit them with a flame thrower for the remainder of the year.

Are there really hostas that can take full 8 hours of direct sun? I'm planning to dig out four old ones holding up the sides of a poorly-made pond (on a slope). I'm going to rebuild the thing in the spring anyway but I want to start finding out now if there are hostas I can plant there again or just some other plant with similar soil-grasping abilities. I actually like hostas, but not when they look like they're perpetually dying.

Pagan, There are hosta's that will take more sun. They are usually the chartreuse colored ones. They keep the color better with sun.

"Sun Power" is one. "Sum & Substance" is another.

There is a small Dwarf variety also which is more sun tolerant.

Hosta's are among one of my favorites, but all the shade areas are all used now.
