What unique kitchen feature or device do you have or want?

Sonoma new construction · More Info

There are so many great kitchen devices out there! Someone in our office has a kimchi refrigerator. It is smaller and colder and meant to mimic the conditions of fermentation in a clay pot, underground.

Have you put something for a specific purpose in your kitchen or would you like to? What is it?

Tell us!

lowesja, many homes in Fl. this kind of window to the backyard.

Suzanne Brown, I was thinking the same about having a cook in the kitchen, or something like the Jetsons had, a computerized machine that put out the food you want. ;0) lol.

Being practical, I would choose a large walk in pantry and in the house storage for small appliances. I currently have a large cupboard in the garage that is a little too close to the car door for comfort.

My not so realistic wish is for a self-cleaning/self-decluttering counter.

I wanted a dumbwaiter when I was planning my kitchen remodel. My husband thought it was a crazy idea. I lost. But, there are 14 steps to get from my kitchen out to my backyard. I can't even estimate how many trips we make up and down the stairs to barbecue, set the table, eat and clean up. The electric dumbwaiter would be such a help...oh well!

I would love to see my favorite friends for coffee in the morning in my kitchen.

maggie, of all yours is the best!!!

We don't have a walk-in pantry, but a 30" wide by 30" deep by 6 feet tall cabinet with full-extension pull-out shelves and extra-heavy-duty drawer guides, since my husband knows of my tendency to overload shelves. Works great and holds a LOT.

Margoesmattress, you should have your husband do all that walking back and forth stuff.

I lost some of the other design fights too...Of course, once everything was done, he loved every bit of it...He had no faith. He is helpful, but he still can't help as much as the dumbwaiter!

Now, now, there are certain, husbandly duties that we are sure that dumbwaiter would totally s..ck at, no?tehehe

Though i totally agree tw, he should be willing to do the carrying.

I have a faucet in my kitchen that turns on and off with a touch anywhere on the unit. It is amazing what a convenience that is.

Yes, husbands can carry things back and forth, unless like mine, he broke his leg and could carry nothing or anything heavy while in the wheelchair, the crutches or a cane. So it was me.... He's better now and back to cooking! Yeah!

jane, your husband cooks, WOW!! I have a wonderful husband who spoils me like you would not believe, but he does not cook ;0(! Do you think maybe we can make a deal for a few days? Lol

Saw this on Facebook yesterday - a smoke alarm that turns itself off when you yell "I'm just cooking!!"

Every time I hear on tv a husband does the cooking, I say to my husband, did you hear that, and my husband says, "well, he's a dope". No offense intended, he is just kidding of course. ;0)

Susan, this so funny, I need to get a few for our house.
How about one that opens the doors and windows in minus -10 degrees.

    Good evening chook ;0).

A must for a two person family -- Have a small crock pot with a timer on it! Or a large one for a larger family. tw123456 -- One of the handiest things we did a day or two before my cook-husband's surgery (he sat on a stool and chopped, and I printed recipes, and fixed the freezer bags) was to fix and freeze 20 crock pot meals for the days following the surgery. That helped me a lot. We'll continue to do that as it frees up all the work for quite a few meals.

jane, please, stop rubbing it in. When hubby gets home, he is going to be in a heap of trouble ;0(!! Lol

For over 20 years, i did 90%+ of cooking. Hubby would often chop-noone likes to see me with a knife in my hand. He haphazardly washed dishes. And he has always enjoyed my cooking and had seconds of even stuff he said he would not eat. 2011, I was operated on for my cancer. He did all cooking for about 3.5 years. I am very happy to be back doing roughly 75% of the cooking. Turned out he is a good sous chef and short order cook, but his cooking was getting worse and worse. i would have starved to death at the rate we were going. lol

My pull-out insert for hanging pans and full-extension corner drawers. Makes life SO much easy!

    nizzz!

Thank you, havingfun! That pan hanger is actually very affordable - like $175 from Amazon. Brand is Glideware. One of the best purchases I have ever made on Amazon!

Years ago, I gave myself space and elimated a health hazard...the microwave. Still retain the practice in this home.

Janehowelltwin, where did you find that gem? I always thought I was lucky having a hubby who's a general contractor, but it sounds like you hit the jackpot!

That's a great idea to have hanging pots and pans but also out of sight if that's how you like it. Beautiful back splash btw.

yeah pa, I should have done that 2, there were horrific studies 20 years ago, about the things. maybe that is part of everyone's problems. Ours came installed. It does 4 things, it has a nite light underneath oh and a fan. so it is always warm, so even though we do not turn it on, we defrost things in it. and the final thing is every so often i cook popcorn in it, otherwise, i avoid like the plague.

@ having fun...have learned via our health business a .minimum is 10 ft away when it is on...including walls etc. Glad to hear you are on the same page. I met another scientist last year who works in food when we were selling our house, she also said, AVOID THEM LIKE the PLAGUE...people are frying their brains and the heAlth hazards are plentiful!

    @maplemanor

Thank you! The backsplash is IslandStone "Palms". Reminds me of the coconut trees back home :)

Two dishwashers! Keeps dirty dishes off the counter (hand washing is not my favorite). Also added extra space in walkway, so dishwasher, cooktop and fridge could all be in use simultaneously.

One thing we miss from our old kitchen was the fridge that had a water dispenser that would display measured units dispensed, so you could pour a cup of water (or other measurements) without needing a measuring cup.

over 20 years ago, a european scientist did a 3 way study, seemed pretty thorough. Each group was fed a long way away from the microwave. I don't remember, but it was in a different building or something like that. His point was that it was not just the microwave emissions themselves.

Group 1 - standard boiled or steamed veggies

    Group 2 - raw veggies

    Group 3 - microwaved veggies

Apparently all veggies and toppings were identical, only difference was preparation. Groups 1 & 2, no difference.

Group 3, from day 1 their immune system began to be impacted. And continued to go down for the entire study, which lasted for something like a month. His statement was that the mere juggling of the molecules was enough to severely affect our immunity, even when we could not be effected by the rays.

Aha, could not find this last time i looked. this gives more thorough info than the article i had read, but could not find later.

I want a microwave that hinges on the right so I can mount it to the right of my stove. Manufacturers should design them with reversible doors - just like a refrigerator.

I would love a big pantry with a utility freezer in it for freezing garden veggies and for buying food in bulk. Oh, and if it had a kitty door, the cats could eat in there, too.

Soft close drawers, pull out insert for hanging pots and pans.

But what if the meal you want warm plates for is in the oven...?

    AGA!!!!!!!!

    ONO!!!!!! what?

My mom taught me to rinse dishes in very hot water.

All I wanted was some color in my kitchen, so I got rid of the big white box and got this instead.

And here's a picture of my super dishwasher!

We have had requests for the Blue Star Salamander broiler for finishing or browning your culinary dishes. It's a MUST for any high-performance kitchen.

Vegaspat, I REALLY like your dishwasher; the kind that brightens up any kitchen.

I want those slide-out chrome racks for my pot cabinets.

I'm looking more into the smaller appliance ideas out of Europe. The all in one washer dryer that you have in the kitchen like a dishwasher. Also, the counter depth refrigerator that is taller. Such space savers and more practical.

can't use a taller fridge, the washer dryer might be cool. Has anyone out there had experience with small cooking appliances? I want to know the best ones out there! have decided to definitely revamp and leave out the stove will have a wall oven, but all cooking on stainless table with small appliances for the two of us. thinking induction burner, electric fry pan? or wok, slow cooker, mine does not always have to be slow, or is there a better pot?

havingfun There is an instant pot/multi cooker that the cooking bloggers like. It can be a slow cooker or faster and some of them also can be used as a pressure cooker.

thank you bat, i am going to look for that one, had not heard of it.

I want one of these, a salamander:
