Dan, you'll need an ice house in Phoenix! I may repot one of my baby W's and let it go live there. Looking forward to overwintering milkweed and Plumeria in addition to all the Hippis!

This was a huge decision...and took years to really make. Floor is next decision...bark or pea gravel over sand?

Congrats Kristi it's a beauty! You are gonna have some happy hippi's in there. I have a pea gravel floor in mine and I haven't had any issues with it. I'm not sure about the bark.

Wow!! I know you'll enjoy it! Did you have to get a building permit to erect this? Hope you have several empty shelves when you're finished loading it up for future purchases!! Congratulations,...Donna☺☺☺

No permit needed. I'm in the unincorporated part of the county and it's not considered a permanent structure. Shelves are 33"x12' made of redwood slats, and I'll have pots on the ground too. Rain today and tomorrow showing us down. Had to take for off to seal. I won't be moving pots in the rain.

Pea gravel offers better draining. The bark will disintegrate and get slimy and you will have to replace it. Bark could offer a place for slugs/critters to hide. IMHO

Maybe a paving brick floor like the sidewalks or driveways you see? Easy to do, looks nice and no issue with drainage. I'd love to have your problem deciding what floor to install. Looking forward to some pics when you have your plants in place :o) Dan

Pavers up the middle to walk on and likely pea gravel under benches. Another rainy day here. Poor Ray...probably still cleaning up. His area (closer to the coast) got hit with 6 tornados in Friday night's storm!!

Spent several hours working on this today. All side yard bulbs are in (and alphabetized) with room for the large pots of bulbs and plumeria to come in for the winter. Will also overwinter milkweed for my monarchs to eat next spring and some other nectar plants for butterflies to get a head start. Need to save room for a chair and a glass of wine!!

What do you have for a heater?

Heaters are 2 electric units with a propane "little buddy" back-up.

Thanks Blanca! Still work to do today....wind chains and weatherstripping on roof vents and screen coverings on inside of all 4 vents to keep critters out. I also need to caulk along both sides of the center beam.

i have a gutter man coming out to give an estimate for small gutters along both sides and then I'll do a rain barrel and rain chain. I ran electricity to it, using an extension cord, but need to get an electrician out to do it right and I'll have a 4-socket outlet.

UPDATE!! All hippis in the GH except huge pots. I stopped counting hippi pots at 325! I didn't go nuts buying dozens of new hippis this year as I knew this would be a huge project.

The GH is going to be packed as I'm trying to overwinter many nectar plants for butterflies as well since the Monarchs will be back early April (another addictive passion)!

My Cattleya orchid may have found a new home!

You will have that filled in no time and start looking for a place for another.

Both Aulicum and the butterfly are very beautiful.

Ray, I raised almost 100 Monarchs, a dozen Gulf Fritillaries, and several Eastern Giant Swallowtails. I don't name them, but my little 5-year-old neighbor would when she "helped" me release them. Cute totally made up names!!
