Above the stove

Any suggestions for what to do with the area on the wall above the stove? There are no plans for a range hood, though it's not out of the question. I've seen pots hung and cabinets and shelves. Just wondering what others may think. We prefer a primitive, cottage, country style, and we would rather make the area of practical use, instead of decorative. Thanks.

You really do need a hood for exhaust with a gas stove so hood and tile would be my choice

I would put a range hood with above 400 cfm. Depends on what you are cooking but the smells and oils do go up and will eventually start to show stains above on the ceiling. I recommend doing some research but thankfully it's against the wall as the stand alone range hoods are quite more expensive.

I would go with a range hood, not decorative but practical. Anything else that you put there, shelving, hanging objects etc is going to get greasy. Reaching over the stovetop to retrieve items off a shelf in that position would be dangerous if you have pots on the stovetop.

I agree with how2girl, anything you put there will get greasy and require frequent cleaning. If you need the space, add some shelves, if not use chalk board paint on that wall and have fun writing on it. You could also mount a large painted picture frame centered on the stove to add some fun.

Put in a real vent. To the exterior. Without a vent, Anything you place there will get a gross hardened film of grease on it and need to be washed before use. Unless you only microwave your meals.
