Even thinner legs? How much thinner? I would be worried about strength, because sometimes children climb on coffee tables or someone uses them to change a light bulb. I know they are not designed for that, but try telling a 3 year old that when his mum is out of the room. :-)

When you say tapered do you mean the legs are pointy or so you mean tapered out at an angle?

I guess the table top is so heavy that it requires the sturdier legs. I would just prefer something less chunky. Maybe if you used a metal (like iron?) that can handle the weight? Take a look at coffee tables for sale and you will see that they usually have legs that are not so thick, and again, maybe your table top is what it is, and that's the way it has to be...

Would something like that be along the lines of what you are thinking? Or that style but 3 legs?

Nothing is ever how it has to be !! its really interesting what you are saying so I want to try and understand. Its about thinking how it should be and doing what is possible to make it happen :-)

It seems the interesting result of this is that whilst there is a marginal favourite, everyone has a different idea of beauty. That means that different styles and designs are needed to keep different types of buyers happy.

I was asked how do I ensure that a product is beautiful to a buyer. I thought a while. In the end I realised I dont. The product is as the artisan makes it and it is up to the buyer to decide if they like it. In handamde and art products this is magnified. There is no one size fits all solution. Maybe if I selected 100 designs I might still not have a clear winner.

Form, functionality and proportion. While there are a wide variety of tastes out there, it may be clearer to ask which one people like the least and eliminate those. The moment you bring potential buyers into the equation, you are talking about maximizing profits. It is unwise to spend time making things for speculation that have less of a pool of potential buyers if you can spend the same time on something more people will like better. All consumers look for form, function and proportion. It is not the same for everyone, and most will settle for two out of three being just what they are looking for as long as the third has at least some compatibility to their desires.

For example; #2 may look neat, but there are too many places to set your coffee, if you are not paying close attention, where it will tip and end up on the floor.

Love #2 with the metal base, different.

Hi Fred, I likeyour way of thinking. It makes a lot of sense. I guess you mean design, function and size in laymans terms.

Your comment is interesting as its the reverse of normal operation. In that you focus on cutting the undesirable rather than selecting a winner.

It is true that 2 is less functional, which could be why it divides opinion amongst those who love it and hate it.

With customisable size, I can tick the proportion box. Then it just comes down to form (design) and function. I guess the vast majority of the design need to be functional and those that are not partivularly functional need to be very good looking to compensate.
