In my opinion, the set up is good. And if they are working with a contractor NOT a designer, they should be choosing what they want for cabinets and counters. I would strongly suggest new flooring ( no wall paper or border either). What do they want the kitchen to look like? White cabinets? A specific wood and what finish? I would replace the island as it does look dated. Give us some ideas as to what they want the end result to look like and then we can make suggestions, post photos etc.

A contractor will keep the same configuration because he is not a designer. He probably has no clue about work triangles or what is in style. But before you go reconfiguring the kitchen, ask what works now and what, if anything, doesn't. Do they need more storage? Does the desk go unused? Would they like more counter space next to the stove or the sink? I would reconfigure only if there's a real sore spot here because it will significantly add to cost.

I notice you have a kitchen ideabook; if it's for them, the kitchens you've chosen are all classic and will be stylish just about forever. Use these to inform your cabinet, countertop, backsplash, flooring, and lighting choices.

If the appliances are fairly new and they like them, then design around them. If they're handy at all, they might diy a new floor and backsplash. I would definitely replace cabinets, floor, counters, and backsplash.
