Love the deep red sofa on these dark floors! You have so many options here as far as determining traditional vs. contemporary...maybe something in between? Judging by your pillow pattern and the existing round rug, I'm assuming the rest of your house is fairly transitional. Attached are some transitional options that carry some red and neutral tones. I am also attaching some more contemporary rugs if you decide to transform the room into more of a "trendy" style, which could be really fun! Best advice is to start with a pattern you love regardless of its style and go from there! Good luck!

I like my sofa to sit on the rug completely if possible. If not the 6" rule is correct.

These are all great choices. Here's another angle, a shot taken from the staircase looking down on the open room. As you can see, I lean eclectic. I will eventually like a rug under the dining table, it has to have a low pile or I won't be able to open the front door. With two rugs I'll be able to better define the two spaces... That leaves that open space in front of the black media/dresser where I keep my table linens, etc.

By the look of your photo, I would either get a really large rug that runs the entire length of the room or a smaller accent for in front of couch.

Call me old fashioned, but in an open room like yours I'd do the same rug under the table that you do in front of the sofa. You mentioned having enough room to open your front door if you don't use a low pile height, so does that mean you're a little limited on space for your dining room rug? It should be large enough so that when you pull your chairs out, they're not half on wood and half on area rug. Chrysteen

@Wanda That's a great choice! The gray rug is roughly 1/2" thick. It should work with the door, but it's always good to measure just in case :) The rug is part of our "Zanzibar" Collection which is available in the following sizes:
