Silver Vein Travertine - does it have dark vertical veins?

I specified silver vein travertine for my master bath specifically because I love the clean horizontal lines. Much to my surprise, some of the tiles he installed have dark, vertical lines. He said those are veins in the travertine, but they look like cracks.
Can anyone shed some light?

We used vein cut silver travertine (the beige/brown type; called Ocean Beige by Artistic Tile) in our FR/Guest Bedroom/entryway. Some of the tiles do have dark vertical lines running across the tile.
