Trees + Patio = ????

We just installed a bluestone patio and are planning the landscaping now. I would like to plant some ornamenatal trees in the corners. My contractor says that trees reek havoc on patios with their roots growing under the patio and possibly damaging it from below. Can you recommend some trees that we could plant within 10 feet of our patio and hope that the roots would not damage it? Love the Japanese maple in this photo!!

Some trees to consider would be a 'Bloodgood' or 'Fireglow' Japanese Maple. Others are Crape Myrtles, River Birches, Serviceberries, and Dogwoods. These should all work with your stated distance from the patio. Good Luck!
