Black coral sans is blooming!

Just spotted this flower on my sans this morning. Hooray! It's been almost 8 months since I first bought this sans. Will post another photo when it's bloomed.

On another note.... what does is smell like? Good or bad? How long do the blooms last? Should I cut it off or leave it be? Can any part of it be planted to make a new sans? (ie. does it drop seeds?)

congratulations on the bloom. As to whether it will be fragrant or not you will have to tell us. The first time a Sans of mine bloomed (S.T. Laurentii) I was amazed that any fragrance was wafting my way. Then I read about this not being unusual and have expected the same pungent aroma every bloom since. However, for the most part I don't get much fragrance any longer. Could be my nose, or could be environmental/cultural factors or all of the above. Roses have a tendency to be fragrant off and on too, so maybe the same holds for Sans. Anyway, let us know what you find.....Maryl

For seeds it would have to be pollinated. Sans do grow from seed, But I think it is slow. Russ or Stush would be able to answer question on that. Reminds me there was a discussion a while back about flowering and continued growth. I'll have to look for the thread. Very nice looking plant by the way. I'm still looking for a Black Gold (Black Coral's real name if I'm not mistaken).

Ohh that definitely makes sense given the rosette it's coming out of is probably the most mature of the bunch. It's definitely the tallest - another photo below. The 3 tallest leaves are right smack in the middle of the rosette that the flower spike is growing from. The flower is also growing like crazy - it's taller every day. Thanks for the info Fred! Sad this rosette won't be throwing out any more pups but there are plenty of others.

Big Plant!! My 'Wagner's Gold' is similar size and shot up two flower stalks this past summer. I still wonder, besides maturity, what triggers Sans to flower.

If I had to venture a guess on what else did it, it would be mild stress on the plant (quick Google search just confirmed this theory). I noticed that the leaves weren't tall and straight like they were when I first bought it and some nice folks here pointed out that this might be because I was overwatering and perhaps not giving it enough light. So, I cut the watering down from 2x per month to 1x per month and moved it's position to get more light. Suddenly, flowers!

Count the leaves on the node. Most have 5 to 6 max. Nothing left to do but flower. Some stack which keeps on producing leaves, Common in hahnii and futura but rarely in taller trifasciata. Some produce an air rhizome that starts the whole leaf thing over again. Or grows from the side of the upper leaves of the plant. My 40 year old's left in the same pot being over crowded started to do. No where to grow but up.

Flowers just opened! Here's an update photo. They're remind me of fireworks. Unfortunately they don't smell like anything to me.
