Is there a good way to winter protect a double knockout rose in zone 5a?

Is there something lighter than hilled up garden soil to put around the rose?

I haven't covered my double knockout. I wait till spring to cut it back.

I am in northern NY near Vermont. The last two winters were very cold and long with a lot of snow. There was a lot of dieback down to 18". I used leaves good on another rose.
