If you’re a lover of details, then a traditional kitchen design is the way to go. Traditional kitchen
design, no matter what personal spin you put on it, is all about the eye-catching detail.

Architectural Detail
On the ceiling, on the walls, cabinets, table, chairs, island, and more… there’s a little bit of detail
everywhere you look in the traditional kitchen. The thing that makes traditional kitchens beautiful
isn’t necessary the level of ornate and complex detail - it is that all the details work together to
enhance the design of the overall room. Nothing is overbearing.

Framed Cabinets
You’ll see the frames and the hinges of the cabinets, compared to flat or frameless cabinets,
where you don’t see anything like that exposed. The hinges are often silver, bronze, or brass,
and the color is chosen to go along with other color and design elements in the kitchen.

Cabinetry Detail
From decorative door inserts, to detail on the cabinetry and doors themselves, and even glazes
and finishes to make the cabinets look distressed and aged, these are all hallmarks of the
traditional kitchen style. Make sure you check the glazes and finishes before you order your
cabinets, though, as some of them don’t have a genuine look to them.

Raised Panel Doors
These offer a more ornamental look compared to the flat panel door of the modern kitchen. You
can find them in many different colors and styles with various shadow lines to enhance the look
of your traditional kitchen. Your cabinetmaker can give you more specific advice in regards to
available options.

Farmhouse Sinks
Often seen in traditional kitchens, these are available in variety of colors and finishes. They can
be a focal point in the overall design, but aren’t always the best choice for your kitchen. we’ve
talked about how to choose a kitchen sink before, so make sure the farmhouse sink meets the
rest of your guidelines before including it.

Luxury Countertops
The luxury countertop materials like marble and granite are used in traditional kitchens for their
Old World feel. If you don’t want to use those materials, or can’t for other reasons, consider
using look alikes to get the appearance of the luxury without the maintenance or the expense.

Ornate Lighting
Traditional kitchens use a lot of decorative and ornate lighting, that you’d usually see in a dining
room, rather than a kitchen. Think crystal or brass chandelier.
