in next spring i'm going to trimm this tree. i want to train it into a (small) bonsai. where should i cut it?

    I wouldn't plan on any kind of cut until you have the trunk about where you want it, b/c once you start pruning it down and putting into bonsai pots, any trunk thickening will slow to a crawl.

    I would suggest potting up in the Spring, and letting it grow relatively wild. Alternatively, if it can winter outdoors in your area, it would thicken much quicker if planted in the ground. When the trunk gets to 5cm, that would visually support a tree that is about 30 cm tall, if you have a mind for traditional bonsai guidelines.
