Asian witch hazels are routinely grafted onto Virginia witch hazel which often suckers vigorously and tries to take over, unless kept cut off. I currently have a small Virginia witch hazel sucker in bloom here. Anyone that has such a combination, does not realize the growth from the bottom is a different plant, keep it cut off will soon end up with much of the top being Virginia witch hazel.

Years ago I bought Arnold's Promise and an orange one....perhaps Jelena...which died. Is AP often grafted? It's beautiful but everything else is yellow and gold now so it is just about invisible.

I was searching my memory and can recall one or two seasons when a single branch bloomed in fall. That was the beginning of the end, I suppose, for Arnold's Promise.
