Standard 20' containers are 8' x 8.5' x 20' or the 40 footers are 8' x 8.5' x 40'. But the ones in the photo appear to be the 40' ones but high-cube ones, meaning, "over-height" ones of 9.5' high. Standard width are 8'.

Great idea with gaps. It makes much more area available. Perhaps there will be nice to have a roof terrace, like that http://www.prefabcontainerhomes.org/2012/08/earthquake-resistant-container-home.html
