Thanks for the updated information. Almost impossible to believe that I would have such a difficult problem locating plants. When this forum first started, I asked these same questions. Nothing has changed, and in fact, might be worse. Home Depot, and a handful of retailers = lousy choices.

BTW, how do I find out what plants can be purchased from Lucky Sumo without a web-site?

Lucky Sumo can be reached at 954-850-4569. Peter, the owner may provide some better details about how to purchase his plants. He has over 10,000 adeniums, I cannot imagine that he doesn't have a way to sell them online, although it is possible.

I have a couple of plants from Durham too, they do have some fine choices there.

Also the site http://adeniumrose.com sells grafted plants in the US, they are based out of Miami. I have not bought anything from them.

I have about 3 plants from Adenium Rose. I like that they label the plants they sell so you can tell which one they have actually seen bloom. This way you know if you are getting the thing you picked or gambling on possibly getting the thing you picked. They have failed me once (I ordered Hasadee Red and instead got a Hasadee Pink which I actively dislike), but the plant was healthy, big and nicely shaped so I figured I'll just get rid of the graft and stick something else onto it after I learn to graft.

As for named cultivars, there are very few established ones that you can actually rely on. The rest---well, I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of commercial growers just shake a jar of magnetic fridge words, pick two random words and add a third marketing word ("Clam Prison Surprise!).

I live down the road and I'll be going there this week. He still cultivates thousands of adenium but it has become like a zen garden attraction now with waterfalls, ponds, massage tables, pizza oven, bbq, bonzai classes, yoga, pilates etc. It can be rented out for weddings! They have updated the Facebook site with pics. It says grand opening is this spring of 2016. I was there a few months ago and it was beautiful. It looks even more amazing now.

I know what you mean. The flower names and descriptions are laughable, and I suspect are not accurately translated. I've been buying plants for a very long time, and have gotten burnt more than once, by phony dealers. However trying to buy quality, true-to-name, Adenium is especially aggravating. Too few sources, and not enough of a selection. Most of the photos of flowers are "enhanced", and we all know that "special" plants are rarely grown from seeds, nor are they likely to look anything like the named, parent plant. How these seed sellers continue get away with these bogus claims, is beyond me.

Named varieties... just some random thoughts.....

I haven't yet found a retail source with a decent selection of plants to choose from. I guess now the latest rage is to grow plants that have double, triple, multi-colored, pleated, pointed-petals, rounded petals, overlapping petals, crimped, bunched up, flowers. To my eye, these plants can look like a bouquet of mini roses. (If I wanted to grow roses, then I would grow roses). Nothing wrong with that, but I happen to love the charm and simple elegance of a nicely colored, nicely shaped, (God!...not pink!) "single" flower. Neat, and tailored. But hey, whatever spins your wheels. People will always grow what they like....or, what's offered. (Maybe Lucky Sumo will be a treat...if I can make contact).

Each year, it seems, that new Adenium cultivars are selected because the produce flowers with new color combinations, and/or multitudes of petals. Flower form and plant quality means little. How many "white petals with red edges" do we need? Are the older varieties ever bred for improving the plant's original qualities? I doubt it. And I guess it doesn't matter to the buyers who just want the latest, newer, Adenium-du-jour. (In with the new, out with the old, collect the money, good-bye and have fun).

So, the quest for a plant continues. It should be an interesting search. Thanks for the leads.

So, I went to the "Adenium Rose" web site. As "Fake" pointed out above.... nice plants, but only one, was a single-flowered, cultivar, and all had the "NP"... Not Proven, next to the cultivar's name. NP = you take a chance....not proven to be the named variety until it flowers. Really? Furthermore, there were no descriptions (just speculations) of the plant's characteristics, but plenty of provisos about the pros and cons of importing plants from Thailand, or, where ever.

Will I buy a plant from them? Take a guess.

I just left a notice on Facebook, for Living Sculpture Sanctuary to contact me. How ironic. I just came back from a three month visit with friends who live in Palm City, FL....about 1 hour north of Living Sculpture Sanctuary. I could have went there, and got a good look. Geesh. Perfect goal fort my next trip in early-winter 2016.

Why are you so bent on only buying seeds from a US seller? I've had better luck buying seed from sellers in Taiwan and Thailand. Not only has seed quality been better from international sellers, but I think they are more trustworthy as well. Shipping was reasonable and speedy as well.

Do seeds from Thailand and Taiwan produce a higher percentage of plants that bloom similar to the named, parent plants, or, are the seeds just better in quality? Just curious. Some seeds can be pretty pricey.

You do not require an Import Permit to order trees from Rinoa to the U.S., unless you order over 12 trees. She sends them with a Phytosanitary Certificate. The Shipping is quite reasonable and probably close to what it would be to order within the U.S.

Her selection is quite broad and trees impeccable.

None of mine purchased from overseas have bloomed yet. Still too young. But several people have said that buying seeds from Mr. Ko in Taiwan have not bloomed pink flowers. Mr Ko has an excellent selection of fresh viable seeds. 26 of 30 seeds from him sprouted for me this summer. Those thirty seeds cost me about $10, including shipping. His website can be found here. I'd start looking there. I cannot encourage you enough to buy from a respectable seller like Mr. Ko.

Frank, I have a few slightly scrappy but perfectly healthy obesum seedlings started in March that I'd be happy to give you. Grown from Mr. Ko seed - I know they are Obesum but I didn't do a good job keeping track so I'm not sure which variety. If you're in Bronx, NYC then we aren't far apart. Send a message or whatever if interested.

Also I saw note of Durham Botanicals above. While he may not have much publicly listed, I encourage you to reach out and get in touch, Chris (hopefully I recall correctly) is really nice and most likely has all kinds of things he hasn't bothered listing. I got in touch once and he was very nice to work with and sold me a very nice large adenium arabicum for what I remember being a very reasonable price.
