Okay Math Folks ;) Quick Question -

last modified: 11 years ago

I'm trying a new recipe for Chicken Pot Pie that says to bake in a 9 X 13 baking or gratin dish. I've already made dessert in my 9 X 13.

Can I substitute a round 12 X 12 LC braiser?

    of course!

Thanks. I had a flash of panic when I came to pour the filling in a 9 X 13 & realized my extras were not here at the house. I was trying to figure if the pastry I had chilling would work out more than I was concerned about the filling.

I've actually used a little excel spreadsheet for this in the past.

What are the depths of the respective containers? We are missing that info.

Try doing this calculation when one of the items (ie a pie dish) has sloped sides and you are using an item (ie a springform) with straight sides!

Both are 2 1/2" deep. The 9 X 13 is pretty straight sided but the braiser's sides slope like a pie plate. I used Linelle's technique w/ water right before posting but didn't want to roll out the dough (which needed an hour in the fridge so can't be done over) until I knew I could cover the 12 X 12 circle. So it's the top measurement that stumped me.

I figured someone here who wasn't frazzled would be able to figure it out easily.

The area of your rectangular pan is 117 sq. in. The area of your round pan is 113 sq. in. You're good.

Following up to report the dish turned out perfectly. Thanks for your help & assurances ;)

and here's the dessert - Chocolate Eclair Pie - to which I'd sacrificed the 13 X 9 dish. Worth it!

So now you see there is a reason for algebra after all!

I was contemplating the purchase of a non-stick skillet last year - one was round the other was square. I was quite proud of myself for remembering the (simple) formula to calculate the surface area. Than a week later I happened to run into my son's 8th grade math teacher who lives in our town (DS is now in his 30's) and I jokingly told her....she just laughed and said she was going to use it as an example in her class.

I'm pretty good at math, but I also use Linelle's water trick to check volume, as a visual is much better than just a number.

    The meal looked great!

(Except that the question wasn't about volume but rather about whether the pie crust would still fit which is area.)

I second Busybee's rather oblique way of asking for the Chocolate Eclair Pie recipe. It looks delicious.

Was that a store bought pie crust that you used? And you had spinach salad as well - looks really good.
