It is from Yemen, they boil it. I'm in the United States right now and I can't find this, I don't know what bean variety it is.

Floral, just a guess do you think this could possibly be a Broad/Fava bean? I've read that in some countries they are cooked pods and all when very young.

Farmerdill, I think you may have nailed it :).

Edamame soybeans are not really flat-podded, nor do they tend to curl like those in the photo. The shape, and the thick ridge visible on the top of the pod, are suggestive of hyacinth beans. If that is what they are, it is interesting that they are served with well-developed seeds. The skinny pods mixed in with the wider pods appear to be cowpeas.

I looked up the hyacinth bean, they look violet colored I don't think it is it.

I don't know but I'm pretty sure it isn't Fava. Those beans lie parallel to the sides of the pod, not perpendicular as in the picture. Unless there is a very distinctive local variety.

I've Googled about a bit and came up with the name Pawata which led to Dolichos ie Hyacinth or Lablab beans. I imagine there are many local cultivars. Pawata

Getting closer :), it sure looks like the same or something similar to the OP's picture.

There many different varieties of Dolichos, both purple and green varieties. I was under the impression that the pods of these should only be eaten when the beans inside were very small, just starting to form but then again I could be wrong It wouldn't be the first time ;).

Ditto on the above. Hyacinth beans can have a variety of different colored flowers & pods. I've grow types with light green pods, dark green, and purple. The beans in the photo look similar to a green-podded bean offered by Seeds of India, which I believe (based upon their photos, and those posted by gardeners who grew them) to be a hyacinth bean:

Apparently, some varieties are grown for the beans, rather than the pods. India has put effort into breeding & domesticating the hyacinth bean; it really is the land of legumes. It's humbling to realize that we in the West know so little, about beans eaten by millions in other cultures.
