Drywall textures - wall and ceiling match?

Smooth walls here in the NW are very costly. I had requested very light orange peel on both the walls and ceiling. Both the drywall contractor and painter say "NO" you can't have the same texture on both. They wanted me to go skip trowel which I HATE! Why can't the texture be the same?

If is does need to be different I am thinking smooth ceilings with light orange peel walls

That's nuts! It's expensive because it takes them more time and more skill to make walls and ceilings smooth. I have both walls and ceilings smooth. They're just being lazy. How much more are they going to charge you? Ridiculous! Get some other bids. I've learned to do it myself. It's tedious but worth it. I remodeled a 1926 Tudor house that some previous owner had put on some wall texture that looked like popcorn ceilings on the walls. I scraped it off in both the living and dining rooms. Some areas came off easily, some areas left blisters on my hands and some rooms had terrible drywall done. It took me five (yes 5) coats of joint compound it get it smooth but when it was done it looked fantastic. There was one painter who was from Russia and he kept saying, "You want museum?" Yes, I want museum. Don't settle. You'll always hate it.

different regions do things differently. here on the west coast there's a lot of homes that have the same texture on walls and ceilings

Of course you can have orange peel on the walls and ceiling. Fire the painter and the dry wall person. They are lazy and want to do quick work for the same $$. BS

Get a few bids and don't even ask options. Just say "I want my walls and ceilings light orange peel." Professionals won't even question it.

LOL They all just want to do things like a tract house. The plumber had a fit over my wall faucets too. He ended up fired but with the construction boom we are having we can't get another plumber so now have to finish the work ourselves. I am getting pretty b****y fighting with these guys. They all buddy up to my husband and try to convince him of their way of thinking. I am just going to put my foot down and insist they do what I want. Thank you all for letting me know I'm not nuts! (at least on this issue)

Yes, be the "witch". It's your house and you're paying them. You're the boss. Just have hubby say..."Whatever my wife wants". Happy wife, happy life. hehehe

I hate orange peel and wondering as I remodel/redo rooms can I mix and match textures in the same home. I'd gladly take skip trowel!
