Bath rugs

I have reversible rugs in my bathrooms. When I wash them in the machine, they don't extract well and are soaking wet when the cycle is done. I have to wring them out as best as I can and then put them in the dryer twice. Why does that happen? I've tried balancing them out with towels, but they just retain too much water. Is there any way to rectify this situation or should I purchase a different kind of rug?

These are hard on washers because they are so absorbent. I set my front loader to a medium spin and do a second rinse and spin, then put them in the dryer. Yes, they sometimes need two cycles in the dryer -- or, if the weather is dry, I finish them outdoors.

Worst rugs ever are the rubber-backed things. The backing disintegrates in the washer.

I have the reversible rug and have learned that it will not dry in the dryer. Two full runs and still soaking. It will dry overnight if after the drye r I hang it over the shower rod. Would never have thoughtof the expense of maintaing a non-rubber backed bath rug.

Exactly! I'm looking into an alternative. Thanks!

I had the same problem with rugs I had in my vacation rental. Then I bought one from Ikea for about $10 and love it! So inexpensive I can have extras on hand- Ikea bath mat.

Numbers, how fast will this one dry in the dryer?

I have some from Pottery Barn that are nice and thick. My full size Miele washing machine does a pretty good job of getting the water out of them and the dryer gets them 90% dry on the normal setting. So you either need new thinner bathmats or new W/D!!!

Palo, I can't answer for sure since I haven't washed mine yet, but it is very lightweight so I think it should dry quickly.

I gave up on plush bathmats. I use THESE from Ikea. They're very much function over form of course, but I just change them out whenever I wash our white towels 2-3 times a week and they dry as quickly as the towels.

Kaylie, I got frustrated with mats that don't wash and dry easily and replaced them in three bathrooms with these in cotton from LL Bean. They are great quality, generously sized, and wash and dry with towels (being only slightly heavier than a nice towel).

My only caution would be if you have someone bathing in your house where the non-slip backing may be an issue....these do not have a rubberized or non-slip backing. I have tile floors in two bathrooms and no one has taken a header stepping out of the shower, but I'm still a little on the fence about buying them for my 89 yr old mothers new retirement apartment. I may take one with me, try it on her floor before ordering for that room.

Thank you, numbers and benjes! We had to go out to close to Hicksville Saturday and I bought three of those ikea mats. One for each bath and one for the kitchen. The kitchen one is for the highest traffic area where I had noticed the pk,y starting to look less smooth. I'm sure if I had my own washer and dryer it would have been much easier to use the thick, plush ones. But honestly, tbese Ikea ones look just fine to me so far.
