Quilt as you go finished.

This is my 1st quilt as you go quilt. I wish I was better at free motion quilting. I hear a LOT of practice is needed. The blocks are 13", so should fit a Queen bed.

Joan, how clever! I love the "beachy" blocks set with the diagonals. Congrats on finishing it! I've never done a QAYG.

Yes I did quite like this process. All the blocks are quilted separately on my regular sewing machine, then put together with sashing. I think this is my favorite block. Just googled cartoon seashells, butterflies etc and free handed the filler with a frixion pen, then painstakingly sewed 2 or 3 stitches at a time by sewing machine. Definitely free motion quilting is on my to do list to get some practice.

That is a wonderful quilt. I just love your colors. I hope you get around to FMQ one day. It does take practice but is fun when you master it.

I took my first class a month or 2 ago. Bought the gloves, now just need to get rid of a few other projects around the house, and practice. lol

It looks great. For me, the hardest part of QAYG is doing the sashing.

How did you do your sashings?

I cut the back piece a little wider than the front. Fold the wider in 1/2. Sew the folded piece, raw edges at the edge of the back of your block, and the narrower piece to the front of the block ( all 1 seam). Then sew the next block to the raw edge of the front sashing, finishing the front. The 2 blocks meet (no space) . The folded edge of the back sashing can be machine or hand stitched to the 2nd block.

You did an awesome job! I'm in the same class as you as far as quilting. But I keep reading, practice, practice, practice, practice...... now, if I only had the time to practice, practice, practice....
