Quicksand

OMG! If I don't get this one to root I'll be upset! Had to go grocery shopping yesterday, and I always check the florist roses at Safeway just to see what's there. I almost fell on the floor when I saw this one! I never would've guessed they would ever get this beauty in! I potted up 12 stems. We shall see what happens this time! If I can just get one stem to root...

    Fascinating
colour! Good luck Beth - hope they root!

Also went straight to HMF - nothing but I found something on a Chineses? Website - here's the web-translation. I thought it was interesting because it mentions the zone:

    Name:
    quicksand
    Breeder: France Evelyne Fazari
    Category: cut flower Rosa
    Color: beige, light brown,
    Average diameter: 5.0-5.5 cm
    Height: 50-70 cm in stem
    Flowers: 45
Habits: more repeat blooming season. Tolerance for the United States Department
of agriculture zone 6B-9B (the default). Can be used for cut flowers or
    exhibition
A special color, suitable for wedding flowers

@ Andrea - I also have Mokarosa on order. Thought it was only available here in Europe. Where did you order yours?

I've looked at this rose soooooo many times hoping I could find one for sale with no luck. There's soooooo many florist roses I'd love to try to root but haven't tried many yet. Getting my hands on them is the hardest part without paying a fortune. We don't have anybody around us that ever carries such beauties. I wish you the best of luck rooting. I will def try some this spring of something. I tried Keira with no luck! Grrrrrrr. Judy

Wishing you the best of luck!

Sad to hear 'Keira' didn't root. I bought liquid rooting hormone to try on mine. Visions of replacing the too large oldies with new own roots. Hah.

'Mokarosa' must be on your list Beth. I'm wondering if we'll have better luck here (U.S.) getting a Fryer rose than a Fazari one?

I wish MOKAROSA was available for sale here in the USA!

As far as getting these babies to root... I hope it works this time. I thought I had figured out what to do, but blew it and let the stems dry out on all the last batches I tried. What I'm doing now is dipping the cut stems in peroxide/water and potting up in either band pots I've gotten roses in, or in the clear plastic cups. I'm putting two of them in Hefty 2.5 gal zip-lock baggies and keeping them misted well. I decided to try this time taking the leaves off because they get moldy and create mold on the stems. I'm trying a method one of you ladies mentioned on one of the threads. I apologize because now I can't remember which thread or who it was that said she was putting the cuttings in darkness for the first week or so. After that I will give them a bit of light for a few hours a day until it looks like they're rooting.

Where I blew it with the other cuttings... I decided to put them outside after a few weeks with cut-off 2litre bottles over them with no lids. I thought maybe the mold was due to them getting too warm in the enclosure I had them in initially. But then they got too dried out. I put them back in the big baggies and kept them misted, but it was too late. One by one they turned black. I do have one or two stems that might have made it tho. Only time will tell!

I'll keep everybody posted if I get these babies to root.

Beth you can get Mokarosa thru FilRoses if you're interested in ordering. It's more worth your money on shipping if you order more than one rose though. I have it on order but Chris from Kordes urged me not to order anymore bc of some bug that can destroy our forest. They did send nice bushes and most of mine survived but the ones that didn't I believe was my fault. Again good luck! Judy

Prettypetals, I read a thread on the antique rose forum regarding huge ($600) charges to get roses into this country. I knew you'd ordered from Fil and thought if it had been a horrible experience you would have mentioned it.

So what's the real story? Will customs hold the roses ransom?

    Yikes $600?!?

Yes, I ordered my Mokarosa along with two others from filroses back in June. It was my first order so I only got three. If everything goes smoothly I will be ordering more soon. I got an email confirmation right after I ordered stating that they would not ship til mid November. So hopefully they are starting their journey soon and I don't get some giant import fee, hubby would have a fit lol!

Twas I that mentioned putting the cutting in the dark. :) I tried so many different ways and nothing worked. But the ones that worked better were in more shade. So I thought, well, I'll put them in the dark for a week (under a a large cut open plastic garbage bag) and leave them alone (well watered though). After a week, they were growing leaves!!

    Hope this works for you!!

Irisgal when I ordered my roses were held up at the New York airport for almost three weeks I believe. I can't remember why but probably with the state of the world right now things coming from Belgium are highly inspected. They had def been ransacked thru but were in good condition when they arrived. It was also Christmas time and that prob slowed the process. I got my first order Christmas Eve and what a joy that was. I was only charged 30 dollars for my order but it was whatever is equivalent in their money which was somewhere around 45$ maybe for US currency. I'm sure someone on here knows the exchange but I don't. My first order was small just bc I wanted to see what the plants looked like and they were nice so I placed a bigger order the second time. They are awesome to deal with and answers your emails in a timely manner. If you have an ongoing order they will give you a code to use so you don't have to pay shipping charges but once. I'm not sure what the $600 charge was for for the other people but when mine was held up they offered to give me a refund but I waited for my delivery. Judy
