Small foyer, big lighting issue!

We just painted the stairs that run from the front door up to our 2nd floor condo in a gray-white, hoping that it would lighten it up. It helps, but now I need to replace the chandelier, which aside from being insanely ugly, casts shadows all over the walls that are a bit disorienting. In looking for new lighting, I'm concerned that most chandeliers will have a similar problem. My question is: how do I choose a light for a tight, dimly lit space, that maximizes lighting and won't cast shadows everywhere? For some reason I can't get a photo to upload here so I'm putting it in the comments below.
