Help! I'm desperate need of decorating/furniture placement advice.
Comments (29)Hello there:) I really dig your sofa! I noticed your mirror on the mantel and I was thinking that perhaps rather than have it lean so that the mirror tilts upward towards the ceiling you might hang it so that the bottom of the mirror is 6" to 8" inches from the mantle. However, when you do, have it hung like a painting whereby there is a wire in the back stretching from one end to the other. And when you hang it, have the upper part of the mirror tilt forward at a slight angle approximately five degrees. In essence it would be tilting towards the floor rather than the ceiling. This is akin to the way mirrors and photos were hung early in the previous century. Your furniture has that early flavor but with the contemporary cozy comfiness of today. I hope all comes together well for you! Regards, Anthony...See MoreDesperately seeking advice for contemporary curb appeal for DC ranch
Comments (12)Yup, I never understood why gutters are considered trim. I would do my best to blend them in and make em' as invisible as possible, especially the extension. I like your idea of expanding the platform. I would do it with curved lines. You need walls, and or, terraces on both sides of the driveway or an informal rock garden that can serve as a wall. Mowing that steep sloop, even with a string trimmer, is difficult and dangerous. Since your house is at the end of a T, do headlights bother you at night? Even with the drapes drawn every night, it would drive me nuts. :-) Maybe you could consider evergreen plants tall enough to help shield your house from the lights. It would probably lessen your curb appeal quite a bit, but to me, that's only important if you're selling. Why make a view for the public when you can make it for yourself by designing your garden from the inside out rather than from the outside in? I'm a garden freak, so I'm prejudiced. You look at your house from the outside. You look at your garden from the inside. You should design each with that in mind. Comments (12)It does seem like those uppers should go, but it also looks like you have some serious storage challenges, based on the amount of stuff on your counters and floors. Removing the cabinets may give you a nice open area but it won't do any good if you now have nowhere to put your groceries and dishes. I don't have any great solutions, someone more talented than I can lay out alternate plans, but be wary that no kitchen will look lovely if there is not appropriate storage for keeping things organized and counters clear. And another bit of advice, if you like entertaining, don't stop just because you don't have a magazine-perfect space. Your guests won't mind! Time with friends and family is worth more than the best kitchen in the world....See MoreDesperately seeking advice
Comments (16)I like your cabinets, but realize mot everyone likes stained wood. Here is a kitchen which may be older than yours with a lovely lighter backsplash and countertop: http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/4512247/finally-finished-with-kitchen-updating I also kept my stained cabinets and went with light quartz counters, cream subway tile and a farm sink. I don't dislike your countertop and if you paint the cabinets similar to the painted side of the island, the granite will go well. If this was my kitchen I would change out the backsplash to cream subway tile and that is all. I am not sure of the cost. Subway tile is inexpensive. The labor for installing subway tile was $500 for my neighbor, but I've also heard some tilers say $1000 is their minimum. She did not have an old backsplash removed - so that will be more. If you want something fancier, it will cost more. If you don't have under cabinet lighting, have that done while you are changing the backsplash....See Moremnjpreciado
