The cheapest specialized company I have dealt with is EasyClosets, where you can try changing the parameters around to monkey with price. Also, at Home Depot, Closet Maid makes some simple systems that might do what you want, and have adjustable widths -- I recently got one with two bars on one side and one bar on the other, with some shelves in between, for under $100.

Thank you for your help! Since you have seen both, is the quality of easy closets a lot better than closet maid?

Check out Container Store's Elfa line. Probably cheaper than companies like Easy, Classy, or California Closets (though I'd still get a quote from one of those companies to be sure), but better quality & I think more flexible than Closet Maid from HD & Lowe's. I think Container Store will help you design & maximize the space too (we've always done it ourselves though)....you do the labor....though I bet you could hire someone, if not from their store, then from Houzz (use the find a pro section....look for a handyman in your area) to install.

That said...I've used all three options over the years (CA/Classy Closets, Elfa & Closet Maid). Each product has their place....it is great to have choices.

The closet companies often produce a beautiful product...but are usually pricey (we did a master closet in a condo, and later whole house's storage using two different companies....both were huge selling features when we sold).
Closet Maid is budget friendly, and certainly geared toward a child's closet. We purchased & lived in a home we knew we were only going to be in 1 1/2 yrs....we put in Closet Maid in all the closets, laundry & pantry. It was adequate & functioned well....not very versatile long term, but the price point of the home just did not justify going higher in closet materials. Using Closet Maid allowed us to increase functionality (which did help sell the home), at minimum cost. Of course, no hand holding with that product....we did all the measurements, design & installation ourselves. If I remember correctly my dh replaced the stock screws with beefier options too.

Elfa I think is a great in between product, but more of an investment than Closet Maid, but better quality, more choices, looks nicer (imo), and can be switched up more easily. If you ever move, it might be easier to take down & move with you, if you desired, based how the system is hung off a top rail.
