Three hinges?

I just bought new Decora inset cabinets, and I ordered partial exposed finial hinges instead of the European (concealed) style. They just arrived, and I was shocked to see that the 39-inch tall wall cabinets came with three hinges instead of two. I think it looks bad. KD tells me that is standard, but I have my doubts. The cabs in the showroom had two sets of hinges, and I have found several sites that say two hinges work for doors up to 60 inches. Anyone have a similar experience? Thanks.

It really depends on the quality of the hinge and the construction of the door. If the hinge is weak, you will need three. If the door is made of material that moves with temperature and humidity changes then the third hinge is needed to keep the door straight.

The Decora cabs in the showroom showed two hinges. When ordering, we worked from the Decora specs guide (PDF below, careful - 12MB). Hinge info on p. F9 shows a drawing (not a
photo) of a door with two hinges. Notes accompanying the drawing say nothing about the number of hinges. KD never mentioned number of hinges. Has anyone out there run into this before, with Decora or any other brand? Thanks.

3 hinges is standard in any line with 36" and up cabinets. It is a structural issue.

KD and Decora rep tell me simple "solution" is to remove the middle hinge. Are you saying this would cause a structural problem, Sophie? I'd still like to hear from anyone out there who has 36" or taller cabs with only two butt hinges (not European). Thank you.

Removing the hinge on a tall door puts stress on the other two. They are more likely to fail. It would also void the manufacturer's warranty.

"If the door is made of material that moves with temperature and humidity changes,''. i.e. wood. LOL! Even plastic moves with temperature and humidity changes. Just ask all of those people having issues with LVT in cabins without heat.
