Love the tufted ivory chair! I was planning on an area rug with soft colors and a couple of upholstered chairs in the window alcove, which faces east and is the perfect spot for an orchid. Didn't consider drapes; hmmmmm..... Also some artwork with a feminine flair. Thank you.

It's funny that the first comment you got mentions sage green, because my own first thought was to repeat the look of the lovely library room that's somewhere in the middle of the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine. All the cabinets and bookcases in this large room are painted a gorgeous sage green, perhaps Benjamin Moore kennebunkport green. But now I've read that there's NO WAY you want to paint the cabs. I wish you'd rethink that one.

An alternate suggestion I was going to make was to paint the paneling green, except for the tin pieces which I like. I think that painting the walls a darker color will make the room seem even more masculine, along with the stained cabinets.

A nice feminine chaise in the bay area, or a pair of cushy chairs sharing an ottoman would help, along with a softly colored rug. While the current chandelier looks nice, it doesn't look feminine so a change of chandelier to something more feminine would be a step in the right direction.

Maybe some reader who lives near Rockland, Maine would be so kind to take a paint deck to the Farnsworth and determine what color those cabinets are painted. I'll bet it's a Benjamin Moore color. I've been there twice but never with a paint deck in hand. Next time, if I'm lucky enough to go to Maine again, I'll take one.

Deborah wow what a beautiful room. I love the rug posted above with the soft colors. Can't talk too long today on a trip to Hawaii that our sons surprised us with last Christmas and we are just now making the trip. Every plane has been delayed and we are in San Francisco and are supposed to be boarding soon. Wanted to say hi and tell you I'll be checking back soon. Thank you Carolyn. Just looked up the Farnsworth Museum library. It is very pretty and I do love the color, but I also like the tone of wood in the office. It matches all of the other wood in the house and is very warm feeling. What are your thoughts on drapery panels flanking and in between the windows in the bay in the Farnsworth color?

The chandelier looks more masculine in the photo than it does in person. It has lovely intricate vines.

I think a pair of chairs with a table between would be my preference over a chaise, as there is a sitting area in the master that I plan on placing a chaise lounge in for a cozy reading area.

Any seating in the office would be mostly for when Bill comes to brainstorm with me on something, which is often...

He wants me to use the current living room rug for my office, but I would prefer cooler, lighter tones. Let the games begin!

Lowering the current chandelier would help. It seems to be hung quite high. Yes, drapery panels in a color from the rug and chairs would be nice and I'd be happy to see some of that paneling covered by the draperies. There's not sufficient wall space for the drapery panels on each end so they'd have to hang over the paneling. There's enough space for the 2 panels in the middle, but not on the ends.

I do like the Farnsworth color. I know rugs need to be seen and touched in person, but I found this one that has the blue green color and cream combination that I like.

When you remove tin, try temporary/removable wallpaper in those areas. Drapes, chaise, rug and more feminine chair.

I would suggest some colorful photography, to balance all of the woodwork.

Deco-I don't know if I'll remove tin tiles or not. They do look nice and the kitchen that is visible diagonally from the office has the same tiles on the island. Maybe just a rug and some lighter colored more feminine chairs and art could do the trick.

To the other comments, change the chandelier, paint color, including painting the tin, add a colorful rug and new chair.

I have a friend who lives in Southern Utah as do we, and those cabinets are just plain gorgeous and give the feel of the high desert area where you live. But the house designs are very large, alot of stucco and tall ceilings and vast spaces in the houses!

So keep your wood, it is part of where you live; you just need to add as much texture in everything your add......curtains, heavy rods, thick rugs, stuffed furniture to absorb sound and space. Deep chenille, velvet, corduroy, wool, etc. The room can take a lot of pattern over a lot of color as there are alot of shadows in your home due to the high ceilings and stucco and niches, etc. so look for fabric and furniture with swirls, curves, circles to add feminist feel and drama and texture and color!

You could always use grommet draperies or grommet semi-sheers, they are not so stiff and formal as pleated drapes, and lend a gentler airiness to the room...they also would work on your side windows. The array of fabrics and colors they come ready made in is extensive, so you can window shop on-line to get a feel for what may work for you and have custom made if you desire to go that route.

This is kind of what I have in mind, but color would depend on the rug I get. Sheers might also be nice. Windows face east, so nice morning light.

I think the room is gorgeous but for an office I would choose wool or linen over silk or satin. The velvet sofa is great but add tufting buttons pleats etc. for texture which will give weight to the furniture to off set the towering ceilings and windows. My friends ceilings are about 15 feet all over the house so you have a great deal of volumn. In fact in their great room they have a swirled drop with beams in the middle of it in a criss cross pattern....very very big beams and massive floor to ceiling natural rock fireplace; same fireplace in master bedroom too.

Thank you soosun2. Your friend's home sounds massive. We looked at a few homes with 15-17' ceilings, felt overwhelming. The home we are purchasing has 9' throughout, with the entry open to the second floor being the only extreme. I agree that something with texture over shine would work better for panels. I just like the scale of the panel width with the windows. Rather than a sofa, I'm tending more toward two high back upholstered chairs with a table between.

Thoughts on two of these chairs for the bay and this area rug? Window treatments could either be a pale gold or the seafoam color in the rug? Perhaps even painting the freestanding desk a deeper blue/green?

An area rug, soft paint color (maybe just the ceiling) and an upholstered desk chair would be a good start. Consider a new chandelier with a touch of crystal.

I have seen some antique French side chairs that were reupholstered with a French tapestry reproduction on the back side of the chair and the arms and front seating and back in a solid...the wood was painted over in an ivory...they were exquisite. Have you thought of using any of the rugs you purchased for your past re-do's? Thinking of the one in your guest room with the tealish blue accents, it is a bit bolder than the one you posted here though...Pinocchio would lighten up the tone of the room as well :)

I plan on taking some of the rugs with me to see what works. Most are reds though and I want cooler colors in this home because of all of the wood and stone work. On a whim I went on craigs list to check out accent chairs. Funny that the very same Basset Oxford chair that I posted above in gold is posted as a pair in perfect condition in an aquamarine color. Is it meant to be until I find something I like better? They retail for $1665 each and these are $350 each.

Perhaps it is because they are against a peach wall, but the blue looks faded like a stone wash denim...I liked the gold better.

Could also use them in the sitting area in the master bedroom.

I'm confused. The gold chair you posted above is a totally different chair from the one you show from Craig's List but you seem to say that it's the same. They have totally different arms.

The light fixture from the guest room in Washington State seems to be smaller than what you need in your office in your new Utah house.

Sorry for the confusion. They are both the Basset Oxford chair which has many options for customizing. Legs, arm style, fabric, nail head trim, etc. The gold photo is from the Basset website stock photo with the chair having rolled, pleated arms. The aquamarine one has rolled panel arms and walnut legs.

And yes, giving it more thought, the guest room light is probably too small.

First of all, I would keep the tin panels because they add a bit of vintage charm to the room. Next, I would stain the ceiling beams the same color as the wood around the tin panels, and I would paint the walls a bright and soft white. Next, I would paint the cabinets a light silvery grey. I would paint the wood shutters a bright white. You might add a few small accent pieces in a nice pastel such as light blue, coral, or medium rose for more of a feminine touch.

Checked out the craigs list chairs today and they are the exact shade of aqua that is in the guest room rug. If too big for the office, they should work nicely in the sitting area of the master. Or somewhere; lots of rooms to fill. Very comfy with down cushions. Temporarily living in the library until moving day...

Thanks Carolyn and Donna. Moving day is not set yet. We close December 15th and will likely stay in Seattle until our house here is under contract. Inventory is low, so hopefully it will sell quickly. Others in the neighborhood have sold within a week. Cross your fingers for a speedy sale!
