Soak it i some water? Not sure if you are talking about living moss or a packaged, Sphagnum moss.

It's packaged, but I'm guessing alive, if you looks up Mosser Lees Spahgnum Moss it will have a picture

This is not for soil, its for my Vanilla orchid to refurbish its aerial root and so it can climb

The idea is to reproduce an environment that they are growing vibrantly. I my yard before a hurricane, I had a vanilla in my avocado tree. It attached to the bark. It was bone dry. Except when I would show up with the hose or a florida downpour would give it a drink.

You have invented a different idea from all the vanillas I have seen successfully growing in person or pictures. It looks nice and inviting but you can't change the culture of what makes the plant robust. It needs a dry substrate to grow on. It does not like metal or plastic as much as all other choices. It likes to climb. Will grow 30, 40' or more.

What soil? No soil for 99% of orchids...

This is not permanent however, this is for the first couple feet where afterwards i will attach it to a wooden child's gate and i plan to fit 20-40 feet on it (bending). My soil is half (1/4 at least) of pine bark chunks and the rest is peat moss

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but your spagnum moss has NOT revived. The green that you see is most likely algae. When spagnum dries out it dies. If you want to have live spagnum moss you must purchase a living specimen. Search Carnivorus plant growers for a source.

Sphagnum use is to hold some water when growing orchids in bark or rock. If you can't water every day, sphag helps by retaining moisture. If it dries out completely, it becomes very dry and crunchy and needs to be re-hydrated.

You can use some to start your Vanilla. Let it dry before watering again (i'm assuming you are growing the vanilla in a pot).

Yes you can let it go dry and wet it again when you need it. I do that all the time.

Yes, it is all moss but it's not alive just rehydrated. That's perfectly fine for your intended use. Follow Jane's sage advice and you'll be all set.

you can buy live sphagnum moss on ebay- there is an awesome guy that grows lots of carnivorous plants and I have boughten over 5 batches from him that are all thriving and are (when kept alive....) a great place to put rootless or orchids in dire straights into- the live sphagnum moss is a great root promoter. It has saved many of my orchids in danger..
