Small Kitchen, small Thanksgiving

Hope everyone enjoyed the holiday yesterday. I only had to cook for 6, so very manageable in my small L-shaped kitchen.

Anyone have to cook for a very large crowd in their small kitchen?

Not this year... but in the past we've had 10 at our small 1,000 sq ft cabin, and managed just fine. The hardest part was scheduling the oven for the cooking / baking and juggling everything at the correct temps. Our kitchen is U shaped, but it's completely open into the dining / LR (main floor) with a bar area, so one can cook and guests can assist from the other side of the countertop.

Our new house got 'the test' this weekend, and it all works! We had 10 people, with as many as 4 working in the kitchen at various times. There was plenty of room for everyone to visit and circulate. I always do the turkey on the smoker, which is a tremendous help for oven traffic. After having had tiny kitchens all of my life, it's such a pleasure to work in a roomy, well laid out kitchen. I spent a lot of time on the Kitchens forum to tweak my design, and I couldn't be more delighted with the results.

We had one 'problem'- The house is so well insulated that we overheated, and had to open the windows! With all of those people talking, laughing, eating, and drinking, plus the oven going all day, the temperature climbed 10 degrees before we gave in and opened the windows. It's almost December, and we haven't had the heat on yet this season, even with a few nights in the 20's.

I cooked for a 'crowd' of one (ok, maybe 2 - my furgirl got a few bites). I had chicken strips cooked and in the freezer and just pulled out a few of those. Made up some dressing (old family recipe), some real mashed potatoes and the green bean casserole. It'll feed me thru tomorrow and probably into Monday!

steph, we're still having left-overs, too. I think I'll make homemade noodles today, to go with the turkey.

We had a wonderful meal, but a smaller group than usual. However, all my kids and the grands will be here this evening :). On T-Day there were only 11 of us--table set for 12, but my brother's truck was in the shop, so he decided to ride with his wife to her daughter's house. Having fewer than 12 gave me a chance to use the beautiful linen table cloth and napkins (set of 12) that my dear late MIL gave me many years ago. As I was setting the table I was thinking that the last time the napkins were used, her kind hands had laundered and ironed them. Before my FIL left, I thought it would be nice to remind him of the same thing.

I'd like to leave you with that lovely sentimental thought, but with my quirky sense of humor I must also relate that later that evening, after the guests were gone and the mess cleaned up, my sister told me she had observed dear FIL wiping blueberry pie, and then blowing his nose on my beautiful, special napkins. That was after I'd rubbed liquid soap on the blueberry stains, with my fingers, before putting them in the washer. Lol, she could have told me a little sooner, but after raising three kids, I guess it's not the worst thing I've ever touched. ;)

I cooked for 12 in my small kitchen....but most everything was done in the two days before....only last minute things done that morning. I did put an electric roaster in the utility room to cook a ham....turkey had the oven. In my previous 4090 SF house, I had two ovens and a warming drawer....cooking for a larger group was easier, but my little kitchen is doable.
