Best seed starting medium

Are there other methods for starting seeds besides rockwool cubes? I'm ready to set up my diy DWC bucket system but I'm only going to do about 6-8 plants. I don't really want to buy a whole sheet of rock wool if there's something easier. Would cotton balls work? I have some jiffy pellets, but I'm assuming those are a bad idea for hydro...
