I'm not without people who disagree with me, but I'll almost always try to let things be a little less rigorous than a historian might suggest. I guess what I mean is, there is a lot of room for a person to make things their own once they've made a commitment (like you have) to be respectful of the overarching style that the home was built in.

I would do as much research as you can (as, again, it sounds as if you have), but with an eye to watching all the hundreds of different ways people did things and created precedents within the style, rather than all the things that CAN'T be done. I think you'll be able to reconcile almost anything you want to.

Now if you were going to stucco the whole thing and put faux mouldings everywhere, I might have a different answer...
