Morning all! Going to be warm again here today, yesterday almost 80 F. Ez, how was your dust storm? I need to do some spackling too, want to have a spackle party with me? Is this your bathroom you're working on?

Hi and bye. Just come on to get the notifications.

I am going to hate myself in the morning - or rather when I get up later this morning, I have been wandering through design dilemmas so will have emails backed up. Houzz did not like me tonight, I had 4 attempts to post a reply, it kept taking half and chopping the rest out.

    Night.

Judy, I use Redkin shampoo, love it! I've seen commercials on tv for a new shampoo line for thinning hair. I can't remember the name of it but next time it airs I'll write it down for ya! It's supposed to be GUARANTEED!

Now that I'm older here's what I've discovered:

    1. I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.
    2. My wild oats have turned into prunes and all-bran.
    3. I finally got my head together, and now my body is falling apart.
    4. Funny, I don't remember being absent-minded.
    5. Funny, I don't remember being absent-minded.
    6. If all is not lost, where is it?
    7. It is easier to get older than it is to get wiser.
    8. Some days, you're the dog; some days you're the hydrant.
    9. I wish the buck stopped here; I sure could use a few.
    10. Kids in the back seat cause accidents.
    11. Accidents in the back seat cause kids.
    12. It's hard to make a comeback when you haven't been anywhere.
    13. The only time the world beats a path to your door is when you're in the bathroom.
    14. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he'd have put them on my knees.
    15. When I'm finally holding all the cards, why does everyone want to play chess?
    16. It’s not hard to meet expenses . . . they're everywhere.
    17. The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth.
    18. These days, I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter . . .I go somewhere to get something, and then wonder what I'm hereafter
    19. Funny, I don't remember being absent-minded.
    20. DID I SEND THESE TO YOU BEFORE..........??????

Looks like a slow day here; I lost 2-1/2 hours this morning, to a meeting that should have taken 45 minutes .. not MY fault!

Ladies, I have a design dilemma I'm trying to figure out. Will you please help me!!

We are redoing a few things in our bathroom but not going over board because we will never recoup the cost. The cabinet / counter and shower will all stay. It's all construction grade and fine...not beautiful but fine...it works. What I've done is added shadow box moulding to the toilet room and will continue it through the rest of the bathroom. I've attached a pic of the toilet room for example. The paint I will use through the main bathroom is a grey as well but much lighter then the color in this pic of our toilet room. It will be Benjamin Moore Nimbus Grey 1465 (I have it in the Master Bedroom also). I'm taking down a very large boring mirror with vanity lighting bars above and replacing with two mirrors and side sconces but I can't decide which ones to go with. I'm finishing up pricing right now to help further make a decision. I really wanted to bring either brushed brass or gold in to warm up the space, plus I have a brushed gold light fixture in Master Bedroom which I could show if it would help. I do plan on mixing metals (don't have problem with it). Here is pic of toilet room and one idea for mirror and sconce:

I didn't even say Good Day!! So sorry, I've got this sitting on my brain and trying to figure out. I hope everyone is having a wonderful day!!

Here is another mirror I'm looking at but with two difference light options:
And then the final mirror option with either one of the lights above or with two other lighting options I've included with the mirror:

Uggghhhh, I can't decide and really wanted your input! I've sent to hubby but he will say "all looks good, you decide"...uughhghhghhghghghghghghfghfhg Our cabinets are dark brown.
Judy, I love the 20 things you've discovered!! Too funny!

I think I'm leaning towards the first option, really helps to put them together like this. Would love to hear what you ladies and gents think! Cyber hugs coming your way!!
TK! To be brutally honest, I don't care a lot for gold or brushed gold, so I would go with on of the more contemporary choices. Does that help?

Judy, sorry! Funny, I don't remember being absent minded, but I love all 25 or your posts! Or was it 20???

Today the weather is perfect for working outside so I've been painting the poor pathetic fence. In the sun, natch. R has a really bad non-tooth, it broke off ages ago but apparently what's inside isn't happy so he's suffering. Poor baby!

Not that I have any decorating expertise at all, but I like the 1st mirror best, but like the sconce that looks like you can pull it outward on a scissor thing. Then again my powder room is totally tropical!

judyg, I have fine straight hair, or did. It will come back...maybe curly or thick or blond... Or all three! But I started using a shampoo and conditioner when my hair was longer called Curl Up. They sell it at Target. Lime green bottle. Left my hair smooth, soft and with body and fewer fly aways. I was growing it out for Locks of Love... But they wanted 9" minimum and I ran out of time. Thanks for the support on the bad contractor discussion guys. Felt really attacked in a very snarky way. Need to catch up on your posts for the day. Roo, rest easy, maybe chat later?

Trag, my vote is for mirror 3 and the scissor sconce. Maybe less girlie. But I am one of the roosters here!

I enjoyed beating plaster off walls and pulling down lathe today. There's some satisfying about hitting the plaster in the right spots and watching it fall off the walls. It is quite the dusty, dirty mess. I came in my back hallway, took off my hoodie and jeans and took them right down the back stairs to the laundry room. I wasn't even going to walk through the house with those clothes.

Lots of the older houses here have basement showers over a floor drain. Having an exterior door opening onto a landing a few steps down from the main floor is a nice feature even if it is just a quick route to the utility sink and laundry. I hate having to walk through the house when I"m all dirty.

I think it is interesting how few of the new houses have a shower anywhere near the mudroom, except for the occasional dog shower. For that matter, how many of them have a toilet kids can run in and use without traipsing through the house? I think everyone should occasionally get filthy dirty either working or playing in the yard. I would hate having a house where I have to clean up to come inside and clean up!
Thanks guys, it's really helping with decisions!! I could sit here for a week tossing between them.

Judy, I use a root lifter. I have fine hair as well but spray root lifter on before I blow dry. Then as I dry in sections, I flip it over to get underneath. When I lay it all back down it has more volume. When I'm done, I use hair spray at the roots also so it will keep a little volume through the day. That is, on the days I'm not wearing a ball cap. :)

When it comes to wall sconces, I really like the ones with glass shades - especially the translucent shades. I just don't care for the little "hat" lampshades or any other type of fabric lampshade in a bathroom. Totally unshielded bulbs aren't my cup of tea either for a bathroom although I like them elsewhere.
Eztia, thank you so much. Actually did look at Queen Anne style lighting to go with the mirror but most are double armed. I am tight on wall space from where the mirror will meet the wall. I have only a handful of manufactures to pick from due to where we will be purchasing. I fell in love with so many but had to narrow down due to size constraints. You are absolutely right, do not want to frou frou with hubby. In our master I consciously mixed masculine with feminine. So, I guess with that being said, we just eliminated mirror #2. I love that mirror, but you are absolutely correct...too girly.

I didn't really find any with a silver frame that I liked except one. But didn't feel it as much. What do you think?
Linda - When I was house-hunting, one had a full bathroom that was behind the garage & had access from it, and secondary acess from the backyard, where they had a pool. I thought that was very convenient .. so you didn't mess up the house. That house had a lot of nice features, and huge rooms, but it was too big for me. And when I see what the taxes are now .. I'm definitely glad I didn't buy it!
Tras, there is a very $$$ store here that used your first mirror, as a pair, in the most beautiful room. I see it more of an Asian influence, so maybe that direction for sconces?

But all your choices will work quite nicely.
Just lost everything I was typing...oops.

Judy, love that one and can get a really good deal on it. The only thing I don't care for is the bamboo look because it brings in the Asian influence, but overall love the mirror. I thought the dark bronze sconce would bring out the black inlay on the mirror. Was also hoping it might help blend in the bronze door handles. I will be replacing the cabinets knobs though. I forgot to mention, I'm debating putting in a leaner along one wall also. It's an antiqued finish mirror so don't have to be reminded of the weight I need to loose but will help bounce light around since there is only one can light in there. We also have this stool currently in there and it will stay. Hubby likes to put his stuff on there while showering.

I think that's everything. You guys are really helping me narrow this down! Thank you. I know you know how frustrating it can be as you toss ideas back and forth. It's a shame one can't just purchase all of it and try each out. Hahahaha. That's never going to happen, but a great thought!
tras, i like your first 2 pics....mirror and sconce, but a second choice on the sconce would be as others have said already, the scissor looking one. and the 3rd mirror you showed would be fine as well. my 2 cents! which are about worth 2 cents!! lol

Judy, is that third one a Hudson Valley?? I just looked at one just like it but with a different shade from them.

Love Tom Dixon as well but not enough clearance from the wall.
What do you think of this one from Hinkley?
Unfortunately too pricey, but very cool. Would love one of the mirrored TV's in our living room! That would be really nice!!

Hi, all, what a day it has been, no painting done as BH has been in a tizz getting everything ready for the painter tomorrow. All the bedrooms are now empty and the rest of the house looks like a war zone. It feels weird too as everything echoes in the empty rooms but it is so hard to hear in the others. We only heard back from two of the four people we called in, but we are both so happy with Mr. Finicky we were happy to go with him. He has assured us he will really do a great job - I did warn him I can throw tantrums.

On top of all that I have been eating humble pie with Princess - I'm so sorry I doubted her now, she seems really nice but of course that is what happens when you get too many Devils - they ruin it for everyone. Hopefully she might stick around and show us her new home in progress.

Tras, does the shadow box moulding evoke a particular style of decorating or an era? Would that affect your decision at all?

I'm a very plain and practical person when it comes to things like this so I would have to say the third mirror appeals to me the most, being the simplest. I do think the second one looks a lot of fun - sort of reminds me of a Disney set - Cinderella and the fairy godmother type thing..........who was it did the Mirror Mirror on the wall?????. Oops I just re-read - you are using two mirrors, in that case I would definitely go the 3rd one.

As far as lights go, how useful do they have to be? If you want/need good light then that would be the first consideration. I hate bare bulbs of any description, and in this situation they could relect in the mirrors sort of blinding you. The next thing would be matching the finish of the lights to the mirror. I did like the first light in the group with the mirror I like but being silver it would be all wrong, but I really like the Hinkley one - provided it matches the mirror frame and gives out enough light.

olldroo, dirt digger is back on 2/15..I responded...probably a mistake, but felt it needed to be said. We'll see if they pop up here too. They do have a point to be made...we are all so confused and uptight about the heavy and angry posts recently that seeing the Devil in a post is a gut reaction. There are some ongoing I've bowed out of entirely on pro to pro. Some of the same cast of characters. Speaking of charaters, I wonder if Aja is off bed rest yet...should probably ask, but don't know her as you do.

Hi just woke up on this lovely grey freezing cold Sunday to see what had been happening overnight.

Dave, you are awesome! I have seen the recent exchanges on worst experiences and I think you are diplomatic, honest, articulate and generous. Anyone who has seen your posts, would have worked that out by now! (Heck, I am quite the newbie and I worked it out). Keep up the good work.

Now that I sound like a groupie, I shall wish everyone well and have a respective, good day, good evening and good morning depending on where you are!

ASV....Thanks! Your postings are fun to read too...just caught that you lived in FLA for a time. I lived in Paris for a bit...not the best place for diplomatic behavior..unless you are a French diplomat! My recent experience is making me even more Zen about things...was already after being raised in an Episcopalian priest's home, very East Coast liberal and really...very Christian in the oldest meaning of the term...none of that born again stuff...

Dave I have a reply and going over to respond now. Aja is a bit of an enigma. I was under the impression she is down till the baby is born but she was commenting on another post a day or so ago about people going to a Houzz event, like she was interested in going but she didn't actually say anything definite. I've asked her quite a few times how far she is - they want to get her to 32 weeks ideally - but she never replies. We have given her all the support we can, not much more we can do.

Ironwood, there is no bed rest. It's one of many disguises. I've learned a lot through my explorations on the web.

Roo, thank you regarding mirror, etc. I believe I'm leaning towards the first option and the forth mirror I posted with the circle at the top (have always loved it on Horchow, was able to find it locally). I combed through at least 20 wholesales and a number of web retailers yesterday and couldn't find anything better then the bronze sconce to go with either or the last gold/bronze one for another option with the first mirror (based on pricing and the amount of light with wall clearance). We need two mirrors and 4 lights so pricing will be a contributor as well as hubby. Funny how I work sometimes. When I look around the house, everything is clean lined. Love the simplicity of it, until you get to my mirrors. Too funny. I have a tendency to just put things I love together without thinking about the style or era it came from, a big mistake i need to remedy. My absolute favorite mirror is one I took off of the antique dresser my parents game me, a family heirloom. The mirror easily detaches and I have it in the entry (wood and ornate). I'm a sucker for mirrors... I will stop boring you all, thanks so much for your help!
    Yes, tras, I am very aware,too. :
Tras if it works for you visually then what does it matter if styles or eras are wrong - isn't that why "eclectic" was invented??

You must be a very brave woman or drop-dead gorgeous, mirrors are few and far between here, the less I see the better and no, you never bore us.
Roo, you crack me up. I never look in them, that's a big no no :). I just have a couple throughout to bounce light around. We have a small place, helps it feel larger then it is. I have three that are fairly ornate, very different from the furniture but I really do like the combo of clean line mixed with a little curve. But when I look in the mirror, it's more like a big curve. LOL
  • 13 years ago
It is when you don't even fit in the mirror that is the worry.

Light isn't a problem here, sometimes stopping light is the issue. Don't really see a lot of mirrors used unless as a feature in an entryway. Can't think of anyone I know who would have one in a lounge or dining room - artwork is so much more interesting.
I agree, it definitely is. We do have both in our dining area only because I had to take out our buffet due to size constants with the new furniture. When I did, it left a void that just felt like it needed something but it couldn't take up any space so I put in a leaner mirror. Original art is on the opposite wall. I really like the set up. Mirrors have come a long way, some are so pretty these days. I don't have any in living room, etc. just bedrooms and entry (bathrooms of course). I've replaced all the construction mirrors in the other baths except for the master. Really excited to get this done.
