I have changed my plan. I am going to plant cucumbers in the milk jugs which will be hanging from a horizontal pole attached to the fence and my beans will run up the cucumber vines.

Update - The pole beans are growing well and producing a lot of beans. I have both roma pole beans and yard-long beans and they have covered my entire wood fence. The cuke, on the other hand, have not done well. It appears that the small size of the milk jugs has limited their growth. They are blooming when only 6 inches long.

My plan has worked, but not well. The cucumber vines appear a bit stunted by the milk jug size. Additionally, the jugs are weakened by the heat and weather and one handle broke and the jug fell. I do have few cucumbers and a lot of yard-long beans.

Final analysis of the project to use hanging milk jugs as shown in the picture. There are 3 problems: 1) The milk jugs are not large enough for a cucumber plant; 2) The jugs do not retain enough water in hot weather; and 3) The plastic deteriorates too quickly and the handles break and the jugs fall from their support. I harvested a few small cucumbers, but the plants did not do well.
