I took mine for a drive a few weeks ago. It was about 90 minutes each way. Since they were in the open bed of my truck, and it was about 35F when I left, I wrapped the bin in a blanket. I didn't notice any ill-effects.

I would try priming the bin with a good chunk of frozen/thawed Pumpkin, a couple days before. Chances are, if they're busy chowing down on something they love, they'll be less likely to want to leave. I've also moved house with 2 active bins. It was a 2 hour drive with the bins in the moving truck. Although I spent two stressed hours in fear of what I would find when they opened the doors, the bins and worms arrived safe and sound.

I purchased my herd from a fellow in GA one Christmastime when we were down visiting our son & family. Being a newbie, I chose to get an already-set-up bin (peat and worms in a large Rubbermaid tub, properly holed) and drove back home to Ohio - about a 10-hour drive. Apparently they arrived none the worse for wear as the descendants of these guys are still with me 5-6 years later.

I think as long as you are in a climate-controlled vehicle on a normal highway and not driving an ATV competing in a cross-country challenge, I cannot imagine they would incur any lasting stress.

I purchased my worms in November when it was cold out and drove about an hour to get them. When I was up there I then checked out the composting facility he was running while the worms sat outside in around 40 degree weather. I then went out to lunch before heading back home. They probably sat in a bag meant to hold sand for 4-6 hours without any issues. Worms can survive a lot of things and should have no problem with the trip.

Play them a little country music and they will be fine.
