Well, it not very pretty, but I don't think it is a safety hazard. I have had several that have been pretty close to the sink and never had a problem. The only recourse now is to have mirror replaced to cover it. If you do that make sure there is another one near mirror area. You'll probably need one sooner or later.

Most codes require a GFCI outlet within a certain distance of a sink. This was probably the only place to put it. I had to have one in my previous home. At first I wasn't happy, but after I replaced with a mirrored outlet plate it really did not bother me. I never had problem with water splash. Thank you all for your prompt responses. We never saw power outlet prior to mirror fixture. Builder agreed that it's a design error and thus issue is not there in the same model homes. It depended on who did the supervision as per him. There is a space on left side but out let needs to be placed horizontally. We wrote to him and waiting for his tesponse

Do agree that outlets have to be near sink. But it could have been put on the left side with some prior thought by the builder. Seems they just realized after the fact. The model home which is the same type of home doesn't have this. Also many similar modeled homes in the community do not have these.

Actually, it doesn't look like a GFI and SHOULD be switched out for one if it isn't. Second......a mirror switchplate cover will make it less noticeable. If it really bothers you move it left, and horizontal, which looks better in most cases anyway : ) and of course the replacement of the mirror.......

Likely one bath has a gfi and controls all bath outlets. My powder room gfi protects all my baths.

If its planned ahead you can avoid having a receptacle in the mirror... but many homes have them and since the receptacle is GFCI protected and intended for use near the sink or other wet areas.

To meet code compliance, you must have one outlet within 3' from the outside edge of each bathroom sink. Usually you end up with a receptacle located in the mirror is when you have 2 sinks, so they would install one right in the middle.

But if planned ahead, the outlet can be the wall or partition adjacent to the sink counter, or on the side of the vanity but not more than 12" below the countertop.
