Master bedroom

I've never had a master bedroom before :-) my oldest daughter, 16, has special needs and uses a wheelchair. She is always had the master bedroom because of the attached bathroom. So this is the first house in which I get a real grown-up bedroom :-)

Except everything I've tried in terms of decorating it has been terrible. I bought the bed at a furniture outlet store and while I was in the store I liked it but I got it home and I hate it. It doesn't matter because it's mine now but I hate it.

I bought these nightstands at world market and I think I'm going to return them. The main reason is because the doors are very hard to open and you can't access the drawer inside unless you completely open the cabinet doors which won't work next to the bed. So they are essentially useless. Plus I feel like they feel a little bulky.

The TV has to stay here because of the cable hook up. My husband does not want to wire cable all over the room. I didn't want something that was too deep and would stick out because it is along the entryway into the room but I think this console thingy also feels bulky and probably a little too high.

These are the two things in the room I really like. The curtains and the Peacock lamp. This is what I want to base the rest of the room off of. I thought that because there was a little bit of gray in the curtains that I could paint the room gray and go with a gray and soft yellow or gold theme.

I am looking for something to put my TV on, night tables, and eventually a comfortable chair to go in the corner between the two windows. And I need to paint. I need help! What can I do to make this room feel nice? Should I pain in gray? Should I get yellow night tables? Gray? If not what colors should I use for the furniture and what kind should I get?

And speaking of gray, nothing in my house is gray. Everything is warm and wood toned. If I paint the bedroom gray will it clash with my master bath? I will need to repaint it eventually but the tile and cabinets are all brown wood tones.

You see how nicely, in your curtain pattern, gray and yellow and brown play nicely together? You don't need everything in your house to be gray, to paint your room gray. You just need to pick the shade of gray you really like to be surrounded with, and that seems harmonious with other colors in the room (same amount of "murkiness" or "cleanliness", if you wish.. It's hard to pair colors that are "clean" (based on white) with colors that are "muddy"(based on gray). If you pay attention to that, you can use a lot of colors in one room, and they still will feel right.

Now, you don't have to take gray(if you decide on it) over to your master bath..you can pick other color. I can't really see the tiles on the floor, and if you can find there something more taupe-use this for the walls in the master bath. Taupe is your gray plus brown together. It will flow nicely, in my opinion. Don't introduce color in master bath that you don't have in tiles there already. I mean introduce it maybe in art or towels or rug, but not when painting the walls.

As for the bed..you're sure you can't return it? It seems nice to me, but I'm sad you hate it, and if you still can change it, maybe it's worth it.

If no-here's my idea..you can find a heavy textile that you love color-and texture-wise, and cover headboard with it. It's gonna look a bit bohemian, and I don't know whether you love this look..but I see you do appreciate different patterns, and a bit of a quirky(peacock lamp), so you might love it in the end. Also cozier to read in bed for example))

I love, love your idea of gray and yellow-gold..it's very elegant, and I think you'll love your room in the end.

But it's a process..takes time. Return the furniture that you already know isn't made well, and don't rush. I regretted almost all my rush decisions-better to take things slowly, and go without something for a while, than to end up with something that you don't like or doesn't work.

I understand you don't have much time to thrift etc.? What furniture stores you have around?

The console doesn't seem bulky to me, but I can't judge the height-you're in the room, you're the one who's supposed to enjoy watching this TV..if it feels too high, then it is too high..

PS I see a brown dresser that seems lower than the gray console..maybe try and put TV on it? For now..

I looked up the paint colors you mentioned-Revere pewter and Pashmina seem warmer, Thunder reads more cold. But you know how they look one thing on the screen, another on the color chip, another in a jar, and yet another on your walls?)) I'm afraid you'll just need to buy a couple of samples and try it on. A bit stressful, but it will save you disappointment in a longer run.. We once bought amazing cream color without trying it first, and the room ended to be peach, but not in a good way)) We just couldn't bring ourselves to repaint it again, and were stuck with this weird peach until we left the place..

I need to go, so just quickly to answer about nightstands for now..don't try to match too much, in my experience-you'll get bored with it..or I meant: I got bored pretty soon after trying to perfectly match stuff. I think warm wood is good enough, and will let you be more versatile with your decor in the future, but you can definitely introduce gray or yellow in one special piece of furniture..like one of the nightstands(that don't have to match), or just a console, or a chair..

I thought you could put a TV on a dresser where the dresser is now, but if you can't see over that foot-board-that kinda makes my suggestion useless..you're right, you'll need to find something else then.

They usually recommend painting the walls last, after everything's in it's place, but since you already know more or less your palette, or what you are trying to achieve, I'd say, it matters less..

One thing is definitely right: possibilities with paint are endless..furnishings, you have less choice. So in that aspect, it does make a lot of sense to paint after main stuff is there.

I didnt' realize my night tables didn't have to match eachother. This makes shopping for them easier! Should they at least be the same size?

I'm also trying to figure out what style would look best. I am wondering if I should stick to something sturdy and square like what we have now or if I should go with something a little daintier with legs like this:

as for where the TV is, my husband suggested something with legs, along this style:
even though this particular table is too deep.

Could you wall mount the tv at the exact height you need to be able to see over the footboard and worry later about finding a piece underneath. You'd have many more options if you didn't have to worry about both the height and the depth.

The nightstands don't need to match, but it will be easier to the eye if they have something similar..the height, the material they've made of, the style..even if one can be a nightstand, and another a chair))..or-one a nightstand, another-a small writing desk. If they are different heights though, you can try and bring them to look as if they're similar...say, put taller lamp on the one that's lower.

About the style...well, they say you should balance furniture legs in the room)) Like, not everything just legs, and not everything just boxy, but a mix. I myself always drawn to leggy furniture, but most of the time they're right, it sorta tends to look better when some things have legs, some don't, or are more boxy. If you going for a legged console, and your bed also feels light and more airy in its design-maybe you'll like boxier nightstands more, in the grand scheme of things. You can go also with one that's more airy, and use something boxy on another end..Like a ceramic stool, you know, only these stools of course don't have any storage..)) Which brings me to an important point-how much storage do you want your nightstands to have? It depends on a person..I have a side table next to my side of the bed, that's deeper than regular nightstand, maybe twice as deeper, with one drawer inside..and I must confess, it's still fairly cluttered.

I want my bedroom to be calm and serene. That's what I think you should go for. The nitestands don't fit into that all. So, returning them is exactly what I would do. You have beautiful hardwoods, and that dresser by the door is stained a nice color, I would try to buy furniture to match or blend with those, maybe even a cream or antique white would probably look great. Your bed is okay, and the cabinet with the TV is maybe something that you can use in another part of the house. I would think about getting a nice dresser to put the TV on, and definitely put the peacock lamps in another room.

I like the bed, and perhaps once you are used to it, it won't seem so massive. I recently went through the same thing as we went from a queen to a king size mattress and headboard. It feels huge! But I'm getting used to it. One thing you may wish to consider is removing the footboard. That way it won't be an impediment to the TV and won't limit your choice of TV cabinet. I was also recently looking for something to put our bedroom TV on and found lots of shallow depth cabinets at places like Overstock, Joss and Main, Ballard, Home Decorators, etc. The only question is quality, so read reviews! Also you could check Craigslist. I ended up using something I already had for now. I like the idea of a console table like the one your husband suggested - it gives you a little storage but still has the legs so it's a bit more airy than a cabinet. You could also consider a bookcase.

A fluffy gray area rug would feel wonderful underfoot.

To address your disappointment with the footboard, have you considered using just the headboard? Some bed frames are constructed so they can be used with or without the footboard. If the frame doesn't allow that, but the headboard is a separate piece, a regular frame is not expensive and you could attach the headboard to the regular frame.

Although non-matching nightstands can be used, it sometimes takes a lot of trial and error to get it right. It seems you'd like to get this done without a lot more trips back and forth to stores to buy and return mistakes? As your bed already has a lot of detail, you might consider getting black nightstands that match each other but not the bed. That way you don't have to worry about different height lamps to even out heights of different nightstands. Sleek nightstands that are a bit lower than the current ones will look less bulky to your eyes. However, to balance the size of the bed, the nightstands might need to be a wee bit wider than the current ones. I would also position the bed so the nightstand on the right is not squished right up against the wall. You only need a couple of inches more.

For a more serene look, use matching lamps on the nightstands. The peacock lamp is not large enough to balance the size of the bed. It is wonderful though, so use it as an accent lamp. A TV console in a different color/finish than the bed and nightstands will bring in some interest. I like the gray one you have, but would also want one a little lower. When you select the console consider the need to hide cables and cords. A wider console that extends just past the outlet would make that easy. If you decide to keep the gray console, consider shifting it to the left, leaving room on the right for an accent piece that could hide the outlet/cords.

While you're experimenting, you may want to purchase "Moving Men", sliders that go under the furniture and allow you to move it easily by yourself. Once you get everything in its final position, you can remove the sliders.

    Good luck!

Thank you for all of the suggestions everyone! I really do appreciate it. I am going to go and return my current night tables today.

I've been shopping on Wayfair and overstock trying to find something that I think will work. Based on one suggestion of off-white I thought these might be nice? Or is this too detailed to go next to my bed?

    http://www.wayfair.com/Woodland-Imports-3-Drawer-Nightstand-9621-WLI4922.html#&gid=null&pid=1

I will go take a look at some black options and come back :-)

I also have a question about the table where the TV goes. I am not sure how deep to get. The one that I currently have in gray is from home goods and is only about 11 inches deep. I really like how skinny it is but I'm having a hard time finding a piece that is lower and has more of the look I want in that depth. Everything is about 14 or 15 and I worry that will stick out too much from the wall. Is there a rule about that? How will I know how much is too much?

Just a comment about the tv. We have always had a tv in our bedroom. We have, I think, a 40 inch flat screen now. We used to have it on a low dresser. I found that when I watched tv in bed I was craning my neck to see the tv. We then moved it to the top of a tall dresser and it works MUCH better. Now that we know how well it work we plan to install it on the wall.

In our family room we have the tv on a low tv stand. We typically sit in a chair or on the couch to watch tv & the tv is at a perfect height. I didn't install over the fireplace because I didn't want to have to look up to see the tv in the family room.

I also use 2 different nightstands.

Check out the Oleta 3 drawer Bachelor's Chest on WayFair. I think that one would look terrific. It's cream and has a darker top, and black handles to match your bed! I think that it is also sturdier, and won't tip over very easy. Good luck!

Sorry about that. I meant Oleta Bachelors's Chest.

I do like the bachelors chest but unfortunately it's too wide for my space. I only have room for 24" wide on either side of the bed, max :(

Do you have a woodcraft unfinished furniture store near you. You could probably find one that is the correct size and paint the bottom and stain the top.

What'd about the Evelyn 3 drawer nitestandBachelor's on WayFair, it is smaller than the Oleta Bachelors's Chest.

I mean Evelyn 3 drawer nightstand.
