Anthony, interesting... Do you know of a good and economy source for Gibberellic acid?

Phylis. I got mine off of Ebay. I think I paid like $10 for 10g. You can do a LOT of seeds with 10g. I have heard of people using GA to germinate 50 year old "California Tomato" seeds they brought back from Viet Nam. It is pretty amazing stuff.

I have also heard that some people have obtained improved germination results using rooting hormone but I have never tried this. I've only used rooting hormone for, well, rooting.

To improve seed germination, Jerry Baker recommends you dissolve 1 1/2 finely ground, uncoated aspirin tablets in 2 gallons of water. Apply this solution to the seedbed or flat with a watering can. I haven't tried it yet. Has anyone done this before?

A friend has tried crushed aspirin as rooting hormone and concluded that willow twigs in water works twice better.

For germinating old seeds, I've read that these work -

- Miracle-Gro, fish emulsion, or liquid kelp, liquid seaweed (12-18 hours). Nitrogen in the fertilizer helps germination.

- Mild tea (tannic acid) solution overnight (12-18 hours).

- 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide to 1 cup of water (overnight).

- Citric acid (10,000 ppm), 3 tablespoons to 1 gallon water. (48 hours)

- Orange juice, lemon juice.. (overnight)

- Household bleach (2.7% sodium hypochlorite), soak seeds for 30 min then rinse and sow.

- Saltpeter (potassium nitrate, or KNO3), soften tough seed coats to help break dormancy. Instruction link
