Another customer service question

I hired painters to paint my ceiling, off Angie's list. The "deal" was $xxx for 8 hours of painting, which they interpreted as 2 painters for 4 hours.

They were a little hard to schedule, and they called only 36 hours ahead to let me know when they were coming. I wanted them to paint two ceilings. They showed up on time. The actual painters spoke no English, but there was a woman with them who translated. I explained what I wanted and then I left for the day, but my nanny was home.

The "boss" called me several times on my way to work to clarify what I wanted. I kept saying I just wanted the ceilings painted. He said he had enough time to do walls too (I had painted about half of them myself at that point). I said that was fine if they had time, but I didn't want to go over and pay extra.

Halfway through the morning, the "boss" started texting me and saying he didn't have enough paint. I wasn't going to leave work and buy more paint and told him so. I didn't hear anything else.

In the end, they ended up painting the two ceilings and finishing the walls. I think for the price I got a decent value. The painting is not perfect - up close, they got some ceiling paint on the trim, but you can't see it from the floor. But I could have/would have done better.

They did end up staying until about 3 pm which was more hours than we had originally agreed on. The woman sat in the car the whole time, which is just odd. And the nanny said that the painters were gross and peed all over the toilet seat/floor in the bathroom which she then had to clean.

I was going to ignore the whole thing and go on my way, but the "boss" just texted me for feedback. The whole thing was odd, they were a little sloppy with the painting, and they made a mess in the bathroom. OTOH, they did more than I expected, didn't damage anything, and the result is good just not great. Would you tell him this? Or just let it go?

It sometimes boggles my mind what the pros think is a professional job. Yes, we can all be picky and sometimes beyond picky, but there are certain things that should be universal.

The only real example you can share is the ceiling paint on the trim. Overall, they would think they did a good job, but it is not up to your standards. It is up to theirs.

Some workers are more careful than others. IMHO you can share with the boss about the trim, and possibly about the condition your bathroom was left in.

If the men did not speak English, the woman was needed in the event that they needed something translated since the boss did not stay on site. They might not have been local, had only the one car, so where was she to go? She might also not have a license to drive the car.

This is why we usually use workers that have come with recommendations from people we know. If we use someone new, my DH is right there with them and can stop them if there is an issue. He would never leave workers alone unless he knew them very well and can trust that they will do the job up to his specifications.

I suspect the "boss" is hiring unskilled, maybe undocumented people, paying them minimally and then skimming off the profit for herself. I'm not sure what she'll do with your feedback, but I'd say they didn't really do a professional job, but were hard workers who need to be taught about leaving no impact in the bathroom.

I don't know what you paid, but it sounds as if you just wanted to get the job done. I don't think you got professional painters, but painting laborers. I would express my unhappiness with the paint on the trim, because I think neatness should be an expectation regardless of cost. I would not mention the urine. I would mention if he used the facilities without asking.

Tell them. Also post a review on Angie's List and help others make an informed decision about whether or not to hire them.

Our recent experience hiring painters for our old house sounds very similar to yours. We had a bit of a communication struggle since the lead painter spoke limited English, but we managed to get our messages across and they too did more than I asked them to do, without additional charge. They did leave the place dirtier than I expected them to, however. We had professional cleaners coming in after them, but I am certain that the painters' sloppiness caused the cleaners to have to do more work and I wasn't thrilled about that. They also removed all of our window treatment hardware (right down to the screws in the walls that held curtain brackets in place) and re-hung only part of it. It never even occurred to me to ask them not to remove the screws, and I couldn't even find a couple of pieces of hardware after they had gone. I would've reviewed them online if that were possible, but they came to me by way of word of mouth. Nothing's foolproof.

I would let it go if you are satisfied.

When we hire someone, which is not to often, as we try to do everything ourselves, but either DH is home or me depending on if the job is mechanically oriented or aesthetically oriented. If something needs tweaking or isnt completely to our satisfaction we are there to deal with it.

Thanks. Leaning towards just letting it go.

We would never ever get anything done if we had to be home for it. Neither of us can ever just work from home. That's why we have the nanny, but she is young and not too experienced with the household stuff.

We don't have anyone to ask for word of mouth reviews. Which is why we signed up for Angie's list in the first place. The Angie's list reviews mentioned the scheduling issues but said the work quality was good.

The woman came in a separate car than the men in the painting van.

I agree with terriks. Otherwise, what's the point of using Angie's List if workers who get ceiling paint on the trim and pee on the toilet seat and floor have their little sins excluded from the review?
