I bought one in Spring, transpotted it into a 15 gallon pot with good soil mix, and let 3 fruit develop. The flavor is good, and the sweet smell contains some of the Changsha tangerine smell in it. As for the cold hardiness, I personally will not gamble with it facing severe cold temps until it gets bigger. I also have a couple sister plants named Orange Frost, and they are also good. If I was in your cold neighborhood and wanted to grow citrus, I would plant some Flying Dragon plants and after they grew out for a while then graft onto them with whatever citrus topping that was most preferred. Unless you have some extraordinary cold protection system to compensate with.

Monica - if you're anywhere near Raleigh the JC Raulston Arboretum has two extremely hardy citrus hybrids in the beds near the main building. The fruit is usable but too harsh for fresh eating. Everyone I know in this area with outdoor, in-the-ground citrus has lost their plants after the last two very cold winters.

Im in north Raleigh. I was checking out atlanticavenuegarden.com and they stated they had one of these trees in a container year round in 2013 (one of the coldest winters) and proved to be very hardy.

I guess it would have to be ordered because they may not carry it. Depending on the price it may be worth a try. I would bring it into my enclosed screened porch over the winter which would be better than fully outdoor in the elements.

If you're willing to move them in and out for winter protection you can pretty much grow any type of citrus here. Logan's downtown is where I bought most of mine and there is a booth at the State Farmers Market that has decent sized citrus trees - but I would wait and buy them in the early summer.

Thanks John. I just bought 2 Meyer lemon trees and a Mexican lime tree at Homewood Nursery for $16.99 each. I thought they were great deals. These trees are from Texas and are not grafted. They're rooted and look pretty healthy (except for some previous mite damage on the lemon rinds of one Meyer.) I sprayed them all with Oberon and treated with imidacloprid and so far so good. I didn't know they sold citrus trees at the farmers market. Do you know which nursery sells them there?
