they'd do well to be beefier, in any case. when you are mucking around with them you may want to shift the one in front of the window. if you look at your last photo you'll see the columns are unequally spaced, allowing for them not to block the small windows.

I agree that the columns would look nicer if they were beefier. I like the straight example for your house.

I think you have the right idea, but the house is not really craftsman, so you may not be happy in the end. what you need are larger supports, this can be accomplished in various ways.

Thank you for all the comments! I never even thought of the Gabion column! What a cool idea. Would the cage surrounding the column be enough or would the column still need to be beefier? Should the cage be wood as in picture or white?

gee, had no idea what one was, just found those in my journeys and thought they were cool! if you note, still has the cage in there. I think you have to have the cage involved. not sure if you want it to be gray or white. I would think if you wanted the wood, you would go right.

To tell the truth, I think that there is a disconnect between the white trim and the stone supports, no? It looks sorta strange, i would either paint the trim darker or maybe do a different support.

to me if you are going to do the white or even if you kept the same you either need to go wider like country club II or you have to double them, they just look wobbly. and you already know how i feel about the combo.

Thank you! Everytime I look at the house, I feel a disconnect. I was thinking if the columns were white on top and stone on the bottom, it would tie in the white trim and the stone on bottom of the column would tie in the accent shakes on top. Thoughts? Would anyone add shutters after the columns are changed? I do not like shutters too much because just don't want the house to be too traditional. If you would add them, where? I also need to find a cool front porch bench. Any ideas on what would look good? Would a orange/red bench look good to complement the doors? Would anyone change the door color? So appreciate the help!

I think it will look great with all white columns, no need to worry about the stone on the bottom, it will look fine. I would not add shutters and I love your current door color.

I don't know if Ispoil meant this, but if you go larger, you just need to encase what is already there. They actually sell those.

And I too would definitely not add shutters. Yes a red bench could look great! and i do like your door color. Just encase each column in a new white one, just a regular cool looking one, not a craftsman.

To me the columns just are not big enough. I would also like them without rocks. I am not good at mock ups but I made one anyway to suggest a different paint scheme.

Don't think I want to paint all the trim and shakes. It is a new house. It just looks too bland to me in all grey. What does anyone else think? Does everyone think I should completely do without the rocks on the column? Just thought it would tie in the shakes more. Thank you all so much for your input! I so second guess myself.

You need a large traditional white column. And paint out that secondary door to house body color unless this is a duplex. If it's a duplex, you need more separation of approaches.

Well then, if it's a duplex, each entrance should have it's own steps and personalized door. They shouldn't be the same. Or no one knows which door is yours and which is your tenant's.

Secondary entrances are generally not designed to be located on a front façade. They are located to the side or rear. They don't get the front door color either. It's too confusing as to which entrance to use, and it does make the house look like a duplex. Paint it house body color, not red.

Also, the house is unbalanced without a window in that wall to the left. It's too much flat blank wall space.

Just getting rid of the fake stone and making the columns white would be a big step in the right direction. The stone is a badly wrong look. It doesn't suit the house even if it were to be of a substantial enough size to appear more realistic.

Sharing my mistake may or may not be helpful. I hated my skimpy porch post for 20 years so I had it "beefed up" when the exterior trim was painted this year. The new post was nicer, but it looked out of place with the narrower house trim and fencing. Since I was not prepared to remodel the entire exterior, I paid to have my great idea undone. My advice… step back and look at the big picture before investing in any isolated change.

Thank you for all the advice Sophie. I am with you on the window. The issue is there is the washer and dryer so can't put a window. Once the Japanese maple grows, will take care of it? I love our interior, but the architect did not do a good job with exterior. I had my doubts, but am a visual person and went along with it. Wish I went with my gut. I will definitely change the columns to bigger white columns. On the front doors, I have seen it both ways and will see how it looks with the new columns.

Also the front main door is obvious to me. It has the steps, chandelier, different and plan on putting house number on column.
