I tried them once. I had so few plants that the wildlife ate the leaves to the ground. I needed a fence, or an acre of them, so only a small percent would have been lost, not all.

I seriously doubt you'll have a mold issue. They should grow very well for you. Is your soil sandy, like in the Pine Barrens? Or are you in an area with better soil?

If they mold, you'll see that on the shells, right off the bat. Now, wild life is another matter. Peanut plants are legumes, and quite esteemed by most grazing animals.

I'm in an area with average to better soil. I wouldn't call it sandy. The garden is in a fenced in yard so I don't have to worry about Deer and animals like that. I don't even live near woods. The only animals I get in the garden are rabbits (which just munch on a little bit of green beens and not even enough to put a damper on my crop and they don't touch the foliage) and a groundhog. Now the groundhog is a bit of a bother but the only thing of mine it eats is corn and it takes bites out of my tomatoes. It either pulls the corn stalk down or bites a tomato hanging from the plant. It doesn't dig for anything in my garden and it doesn't eat foliage. I do know of one guy 10 minutes from me, who I don't know personally, who for years grew his own peanuts and sold them by the road. I don't know how he grew his (can't see from the road) but I would think his soil may similar to mine unless he used a different growing method.

Thank you for the confidence to give them a try! Reading about the mold issue scared me but since now I should be able to easily see any mold in the event that does happen that makes me feel better.

Check in with the Cooperative Extension Office for your county, they can provide additional info.

I grew some peanuts in a raised bed that was 50% clay and have no noticeable mold issues and they roasted and tasted wonderful.
