Wilted sick airplants

Hi all,
I am faced with a most peculiar problem. A seemingly healthy airplant suddenly starts looking wilted and shrivelled. It looks like it has contracted to at least one size smaller than it was previously. This wilted appearance is not relieved even on prolonged soaking. This happened first to a bergeri, which never pupped, would send out new shoots but had this terrible wrinkled appearance. I soaked it for a prolonged period (24 hours) recently which led to its sad demise. It had lived shrivelled up for more than a year. Next it was my Karwinskyana. It is still living-it had a similarly shrivelled pup that remained attached for >1 yr and never grew. Then it was my harrisi. I was wondering if something was off, but it really hit home, when last week, after their usual weekly soak, my two caliginosas became shrivelled. I have had them for almost a year now. These were a mom and pup (separated) and they were just beautiful vibrant plants. Suddenly, they looked paler, sickly, and shrivelled. It was really obvious something was wrong. On touch, they feel limp and not turgid. You can see the wrinkles. They are like shadows of their former selves.
Is this some virus? Should I keep the shrivelled plants separately? Is it because of a near death experience for the plant? Something that happens naturally? What can I do to help reverse this? It is really sad to see these plants this way.
Has this happened to anyone else's plants?
I would really appreciate any feedback. Including pics of the plants. Thank you! Meddy
