A good cleaning and beefier mantle will work wonders. Some open shelves on either side would look really nice. I like your fireplace.

That is alot of stone for the interior of almost any house I would remove the stone from the side walls first and then decide about the actual fireplace . If you decide to keep the firplce stone I would not put shelves on the side walls just way too much for that wall.

Hi, I like your fireplace. If you wanted to lessen the appearance of the side wall stone you could put artwork up to cover most of it. I think a long, oversized canvas on each side would do the trick.
