I have made several and don't put the batting in the middle. I prewash the flannel at least twice (to pre-shrink) then cut into 5 inch squares and back with denim from old jeans. This makes a heavy quilt, so you may prefer the other method.

I like the Fons and Porter rag scissors . I got mine at Joanns with a 40% off coupon. No matter which method you use, there will be LOTS of threads in the lint catcher of your dryer.

I agree with washing the flannel - some shrinks like nobody's business.

Also along with pre-washing the flannel, make sure if you do a rag quilt that when you dry it, check the dryer filter EVERY TEN MINUTES! You wouldn't believe the lint that will come off of that flannel and if the filter gets too clogged it can start a fire.

Yes, shaking is very important. I also shake very well before putting in the washer.
