They were common decorations on faux Tudor homes and on larger pieces of furniture from the 1920's to 1940's. They go for upwards of $100 on Ebay and you should list it using the terms "carved wood greenman face, satyr, Jacobean and English Tudor". Whenever I go on eBay, I'm always surprised by the wide variety of items on sale.

HI -- It is the sign for Theater/entertainment ,- such as the trickster or jester or clown , I think he is called " Loki" but not sure on that name . It is a good thing and is sometimes shown with it's mate the sad or crying face. All about plays and entertainment about happy and or sad stories etc. This should not be anything to creep out about and it's not sinister . You are lucky to have this well done plaque.

Danielle, please keep and display the goat man. Now that we know it is part of the Tudor history, I hate to see you dispose of it. (Sorry Rusty) I don't think it is creepy, He does look like he is mischievous. Maybe that is why he was kept in the basement. I am rather surprised by so many people suggesting that you remove it. Usually it is not considered a good idea to remove original features of an older house.

I'd wager that the previous owners were German, Austrian, or North Italian. Traditionally, the Krampus is St. Nicholas' dark servant or "alter ego." Good children get gifts from St. Nicholas; bad children (and hateful adults) are visited by the Krampus. He predates christianity. His roots are in the Pagan winter solstice celebration. It was only when St. Nick (or Santa) moved to the new world, did he don the devilish red suit and take over both the reward and punish duties. Our Santa is a mash-up of very old European traditions and new world feel-good ideas. Would your Santa have the nerve to swat bad children with switches and then drag them off to spend their holidays in the underworld? Thus his proud place on the basement door.

I agree, though, if you don't like it, please do sell it to someone who appreciates its history. Throwing the Krampus in the trash could spoil your Xmas!

This is pretty amusing. I'm always surprised by the amount of old superstitions that survive in a (supposedly) modern and educated country. The carved guy certainly does present some interesting history, but no one should keep something they intensely dislike. Just pass him along to someone who'll give him a good home.
