Washer just broke down

I need to buy a new washing machine right away. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will probably buy the matching dryer too.

I had to research this about a year ago when ours broke. My vote is for top loading Speed Queen. That's what we got. I decided not to get a front loader because of all the terrible reviews and consistent problems with all front loading brands. We love our set! It isn't the most beautiful set you've ever seen, but we went for function over form in this case, and we're glad we did!

Our brand new whirlpool frontloader broke down twice in one year! Our brand new whirlpool microwave and refrigerator did as well. We invested in ge appliances and are happy we did!

Love my front loader. It's a low end frigidaire. Don't need fancy bells and whistles. These days can't expect any appliance to last over 7-10 yrs unfortunately.

Second vote for top-loading Speed Queen. I have had my set for about 3years and no problems. No electronics, just simple mechanical dials. Large Stainless tub, center agitator and it uses plenty of water to clean your clothes. Bonus points for Made in America.

Our 17-year-old Kenmore washer died this week. We never had a service call. Now we had to quickly catch up to the state of the art in washing machines. UGH. The news is grim. How could the government ruin such a needed an basic home function? We did the online comparisons. We read the Consumer Report reviews and the completely contradictory customer reviews. We then went to all the big stores and got the sale pitches.

We have decided to purchase a Speed Queen for the reliability, the fact that they mainly build commercial washers and driers (they use the same materials for residential machines), the fact that they are headquartered in Ripon, WI, USA, which is about 40 minutes from our home, and the fact that Speed Queen served our country in WWII. We don't care about the basic look or the fact that it is white; it's going in a basement not a showroom kitchen. Yes, I like the pretty colors of other machines, but I'll take a Plain Jane any day over a Smelly Nelly that won't do her job. I'll keep you posted on the final model we pick.
