I'd love Yakima . It's supposed to be hardier than Italian plum and I have that growing here but I'm thinking the quality of fruit on them sucks as I tasted my royal last year and it's way better. My my royal are loaded with blossoms right now look amazing

Mt. Royal offspring seedling, [Petite Soeur de la Mt. Royal] from Hardy Nursery in Quebec tasted very similar, hopefully it will be hardier as they claim, so far it had no die back out on the farm in the first winter, but was mild.

Here is some very nice Italian plums I got this year just a few started to ripen Now. I retract my comment months ago about mt royal being much superior to Italian . My Italian trees produced some bigger fruit this year that was much better than last years most likely because our early spring maybe gave them a head start. This plum is probably amazing for storing and preserving if left on counter for a week they sweeten up pretty nicely.

Got a lot of mt royal this year here is some from the second pick I did probably got 3-4x this off two small 6ft tall trees. They are better fresh eating than Italian

I have two trees, one on it's own root and the other grafted, not many on both trees.

Yes the two trees that were loaded last year both produced no flowers this yearits due to the fact my mt royal are not that old of trees and I let them bare heavily young they are biannual and a cold winter. One I actually thought died completely shot out greens and buds are pushing now very strange .

but on a good note after 5 years of being in ground my front yard mt royal is fairly loaded with fruit and a bunch of mt royal grafts on my italians ,brookred and toka are quite loaded too .

Mt royal seems to be worth it here and is my preferred plum over waneta now as quality is better and they are not such an aphid magnet.

Sure...seems all European plums are less of a aphid magnet and better tasting, and free stone.

I gave a friend in the city a Mt. Royal tree about 8 years ago..that tree has been loaded every year for about 5 years now.

When it comes to aphids, last year my 'Mount Royal' was massively covered in them, though so far so good this year and it has set a decent crop. The 'Stanley' grafts carry a heavy crop and I now wish I had placed many more grafts on my tree!

Not after you find out that they don't ripen for you...sometimes, and die back more then Mt. Royal some years.

My royal overall is a great choice for Calgary. Same with greengage .these trees may suffer die back a bit on a cold snap but so far are great

"Not after you find out that they don't ripen for you" ... then they probably won't ripen this year unless the heat kicks in ... though, unfortunately the forecast continues to call for below normal temperatures.

If your in Lethbridge they will ripen. My my royal has plums size of grapes now. Try feeding the trees that helps in fruit development and size.

Fertilizer without nitrogen though

I Was mistaken . I've never tried Stanley I think this one is for hotter climates .

Here is a graft from 3 years ago. It was about 2-3" scion now absolutely loaded on top of my brook red.

I'd like to get a mount royal plum for my backyard in Edmonton. Where is the best place to get one? Any other considerations I should know about??

You can get them anywhere but they are expensive. For a good sized potted one it's $100 but worth buying the bigger trees in my opinion. They make fruit the next year instead of waiting. They are super slow growing also

Good stuff. We bought really tiny apple trees so it might be nice to have some fruit sooner rather than later.

I'm the opposite, I love smaller trees, [or bare root] adapt faster and outgrow the larger ones...a little small in the beginning but you'll gain in the long run.

Beside my westcot both fruiting good for the first time. Both were planted at same time about 5 years ago. A rabbit almost destroyed this apricot it took years to grow back.

Konrad, I got extremely small/young apple trees and I've never bought large established trees before either, but I guess I will have to see what places have. I went to Salisbury yesterday but they were completely sold out of Mt Royal.

Even my Pembina is heavy this year. Gotta admit Matt that Mt Royal looks good!

My suggestion is wait until next spring. I got my from Costco, and the price is right.

Check with Greenland...they usually stock allot, or Ellerslie garden center.

I tried Costco earlier in the spring but the location I went to (West end one I think) didn't have any. Ellerslie is close to my house, I'll check there first, and then Greenland after as you suggest (both lovely places!).

I brought mine in Northeast Costco. Try next spring about mid-April when they have the garden centre. I bought one 5in1 this year for $35. Try to go to different locations of Costco. The other garden centre might still have it at this time of the year but the price is about over a hundred.

We just bought a house in SW calgary and it appears we have Mt Royal Plums based on the pictures we have seen here. Purple outside with a waxy type layer and yellowy flesh inside??

We are super excited to have edible fruit bearing vegetation in our yard. We have multiple NanKing, rhubarb and a garden!

Our question is if we want to make more of this plum tree/shrub/bush how can we do that? We would like a couple more? Thank you for any help!

Has the shape of Mt. Royal.....did you pick them because they're splitting? Are they growing in a shaded area...seems they could be darker for this time of the year, a picture from the flesh would help for I.D. also.

Mostly these are grafted trees, you can get them in many garden centres come spring. If you have low growing branches then you might be able to root by air layering, I have one tree growing on it's own root.

I was hoping you were going to tell me it was as simple as taking a snipping and rooting it or taking a seed and planting it!

This might be the dumbest question but what kind of trees can you graft it to?

I took some pictures of the flesh here. We took them off the tree because we found one on the ground and I didn't want to lose them all plus we'd already had a couple days of frost and I became worried. So I freaked out and took them in. I wanted to try to 'hot pepper jelly' them and maybe juice them with my old family steam juicer. But in all honesty, I don't think they're going to make it out of the bowl as we seem to eat one every time I go by!

I see that it can compressed the image a little bit but each one is almost the size of a ping-pong ball.

Almost seems a little too soft for being Mt. Royal? Do all have long stems?

Mt. Royal have short stems. Can you please cut in half just as I did showing the pit.

I've picked mine today because the 4 days rain made them split, they're ready, sweet, around 18 brix....should have picked before the rain.

Nurseries graft them to various prunus root stock, mine I graft to seedlings or wild plums.

Okay I hope this shows up well enough to give you an idea. Believe it or not I had managed to leave one stem on the plums to be able to show you the stem length. I cut one in half for the seed, now, I've of course gobbled it down and have a picture of just the seed for you :-)

OK good, at this point I don't know for sure, flesh seems a bit dark but that could be just bad light, maybe somebody else can post of theirs.

Okay I think we're getting somewhere. I took some pictures without the flash in the color shows up much better. Also it appears that my seed is quite smooth except for at the seam. I hope these pictures will help.

You are very gracious to put up with us. My husband and I are just so excited and just want to know what to do to help this 'really tall' Bush that does not seem to have a shape of a tree at all. All we achieved was 26 plums. But again, we weren't expecting any and it was a complete shock so we are happy about 26 :-)

I live in the far south of Calgary and could easily help id that plum tree for you. I have a lot of mt Royal producing trees in my yard .

Mt Royal will have large single buds on this years growth and it rarely grows like a shrub. All European plums produce large single buds

My guess is that's a cherry plum most likely opata . This year European plums produced heavily for many people in Calgary.
