palm roots coming through soil?

we're replacing the wood chips around our palms with decorative stone to make it less easy for our dogs to try to dig around there (it's the only dirt area we have in our yard)...when i raked and shoveled the wood chips, i noticed what seems to be some of the roots from the palm coming up through the soil. am i safe to just lay rock on top of this as is, or do i need to add soil or do something else first?

Hello!

From what I can see in the picture, the above ground roots look pretty small. I'm thinking that even if those roots die, nothing will happen to the palm. From time to time, you do find certain palms with above ground roots, but it doesn't seem like these roots will effect your palm if they die, as long as the bulk of the roots are below ground. I would say just put those rocks on whenever you were planning to as I don't think this will be a problem!
