Chickens do wonderful work don't they. My coop and run are stationary but I do use whole leaves as bedding in their run rather than paying for something like pine shavings. After a few weeks most of the leaves have been completely shredded into bits and gradually it gets pushed out of the run thru the hardware cloth where I collect it and use it in my garden beds.

Unfortunately my 4 remaining hens are nearing 4 years old and not laying at all this winter. I haven't seen an egg since early October. Time to get another batch of chicks in March I guess.

I miss my chickens, but they drew rats from my neighbor's horse barn and the last batch started eating their eggs! No stopping that!

Maybe I can try again since there are several "barn cats". Some irresponsible neighbors let their cats have kittens which showed up at our house! (feral, but fixed and vaccinated for free from our local animal control) We think we have the unfixed under control! No new kittens in a couple of years! Nancy
