Roman shades would be great and I would remove the curtains from the bay window and do the same for them. In fact taking down all the window fabric will be an improvement. Those and that floor lamp are really dating the room.

You also need to remove everything off the mantle and the bookcase. There are too many small things.

Thank you - I just moved in and had the previous owner left the fabric curtains for privacy. I have christmas decorations on that mantel that light up at night....but it's hard to see. A few of those things I just threw up there as I was taking things out of the box. I need a nice photo over the fireplace don't I? Can I leave the mini blinds up and add roman shades for now? Or replace all at the same time?

I wouldn't. Roman shades w/blinds looks a little too much. If you don't need light control, try a sheer lined/sheer roman, in a cotton/loose weave material within the window frames. It'll look great!

I would take down the curtains and rods now and the fabric on the small windows. You could leave the mini blinds for now and just do the small windows or wait and do them all at once.

The big clock and the floor lamp are from Pier 1. Both would look great in the room and you could do them now.

If you need a solution good for a year or so while you sort out priorities for your new house, I'd recommend adding the same type of miniblinds that you have in the bay window if they are under $25 or so each. The label is usually on the bottom rail. Take the old tab top curtains down for a fresher, uncluttered look. Roman shades are fashionable now. You could have them custom made in your choice of fabric or buy ready made.

For me that is easy....Books. Or if you are a collector. Make sure they are not cluttered. 1/3 item, 1/3 empty space and 1/3 item. You can do family pictures, keepsakes, etc. Arrange taller, fatter, shorter.

For fireplace windows, you could have a simple panel of clear textured glass for light and privacy (photo 1) or jazz up the panel with small pieces of scrap glass. You could continue the look with glass panels in the bay, again with textured glass for privacy and lots of light. (Photo 2).
